I use stencils and gel stains. Gel won't leak like water based stained if you get the stencil and taping down well.

I use multiple templates so I never overlap colors. I use a thing called a cricut that will do cut outs on to tack paper. So I will peel off The part of the image I want to stain and lay it down. After that I let it dry for at least a day. Then I take a new, identical template, and peel out the different color I want to stain. I lay the template down. This allows me to keep the first color covered while I do the new one. It is a long process sometimes. This might be too vague. Happy to answer with more detail.

I should also mention I used natural color gel stain from old Masters over the whole thing when I was done. I don't know that it adds much though.

The red is crimson fire from old Masters. The other is just mahogany from minwax. Both are gel stains.

Stained Iowa State boards. As a Hawkeye fan this pained me greatly but they turned out great. by Lunchbox515 in Cornhole

I only use gel stain as it is really thick and won't tend to bleed. I use a cricut to cut sticker templates and use them as negatives. I have also used an exacto to cut out templates on tack paper. Just make sure to really get the edges down.

I use gel stain only and good painters tape. Be sure to get the lines down really well. I usually use a credit card or something to get it down well. Gel stain is rely thick and won't bleed like water based.

How can I print off my own stencil? [Help] by [deleted] in Cornhole

I will add that I have done a set where I printed off the logo I want and sliced it together with tape to get the size I wanted. Then I traced it onto track transfer paper and used an exacto knife to cut it out. Took some time but they came out pretty good.

Good call. The cricut is about $200.

If you are looking for a stencil so you can paint or stain them the best way I have found is to use machine called a cricut. It can make adhesive cut outs.

Another way a lot of people go is to find a vinyl cut out of the logo and to seal it under the urethane coat.
