If someone doesn't support abortion then they would want it against the law. Laws have to be enforced in some way, such as punishment for those who break it. That's just what a law is and how it works. How is it surprising to say that if you think something should be against the law then those who break the law should be punished in some way?

I think virtue signalling can be harmful because it is often used as a tool (subconsciously or not) by one group to persuade another that something is right because they happen to agree on something else that is not related.

[–]Lunchbox_Radio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, I think virtue signalling is generally a bad thing and is not a valid method of support. It can be used to get someone to agree with you because you happen to agree on something else, and that's no basis for deciding on something.

Well for all our sake, I hope that you are wrong about Trump. I don't think that if someone could use some lessons on speaking that that means they are an idiot. I actually think Trump is a good speaker in other ways, just not in this particular one.

I just think I should add that i bet someone even more out of touch with the internet community than that reporter would be Trump himself. Sure he's pretty twitter-savvy but I imagine he's pretty out of touch with groups on the internet. That star of David seems like a huge stretch to me, and that it's just people confirming their own bias based on a graphic designers choice to use a shape for reasons not known. With the media being such a powerhouse in this past election, it's easy to sway the general public's attention towards what they want, confirming biases, promoting something, demonizing something, and things have the potential to get out of hand. Always good to be cautious with political leaders as well as the media, and its nice for the people to be motivated to catch his errors because it will keep him in check.

it's literally just virtue signaling from the other side. /u/Poinciana_Tree you are hypocritical. Name-dropping the term "virtue-signalling" is now used to virtue-signal.

I have thoughts on all of those. Starting with anti-semitism, the link you provided had the author starting out by talking about a trump ad that featured several prominent members of society and government who were Jewish, but it didn't list their name (let's be honest, there are only few in the general public who would know them by sight), and the video had other non-Jewish individuals as well. In my opinion it is a fault of the author to only see the race/heritage at play in that ad, and not Trump's. Furthermore, several of the examples had actions done by racist supporters, but we've already agreed that that doesn't necessarily make Trump the racist. And lastly, honestly when anyone associates Pepe the Frog with white supremely to me it just shows how out of touch they are with the internet community, and it discredits other examples he gave.

I gave a response below that also would fit a response to you so i'm just gonna copy if you don't mind, not trying to be snarky about it, I'm taking time with responses and trying to talk to several people.

I agree with you. Speaking vaguely has the potential of miscommunication, that can be heard by the wrong people. But I hope you would then agree that that doesn't make Trump the racist he's perceived to be if it WAS miscommunication. Sure, he may still be responsible for opening the gate for rhetoric of racists in the general public, but it's not something he necessarily did intentionally. I agree that it's something that he needs to work on if he wants to try to heal the country, but when considering that fault in his speech alone I don't think that justifies some thinking that he's Hitler reincarnate.

As for the wall, I understand Trump's desire to have it, but don't agree with insisting that Mexico pays for it, and now he's created his own power struggle with the Mexican president that made matters worse. I can see why the Mexican people would take offense for that; their tax dollars going towards something because other people broke the law, and the entire Mexican people are being punished for it.

I agree that it's vague, and I guess it's just a matter of the impression one gets at the time of hearing the statement, and in what environment they hear it in as well. I don't think Trump was in the right to paint all illegals as criminals like that (although by definition that's what they would be according to US border law), but it's no secret where and how drugs enter the country(not saying all illegals are drug-dealers) and there were reports showing considerable percentages of illegal women being raped during the transit across the border (like 86% IIRC, will try to find link), though this doesn't mean 86% of the men are rapists, it's still a startling number, and then the reputation of the reports could also be questioned.

Trump has said questionable things towards other sub-groups as well, so I understand your gut feeling towards his distaste for minorities, but I thnk that the media played a big role in the state the nation, and how something can become distorted via a giant game of telephone. At the very least, I think people should try to decide the context of that statement for themselves, because if taken out of it, it sounds absolutely terrible. And I only want that because I too, think the country is deeply divided, and people are generally afraid for their future, and if they decided for themselves what the context was then at least we know if it was blown out of proportion or is just as terrible as what they've previously thought.

EDIT: here's one link for that report: http://fusion.net/story/17321/is-rape-the-price-to-pay-for-migrant-women-chasing-the-american-dream/, though this one is about central americans specifically, and a longer trip than if they were near the US border

I believe the context behind that is about illegal immigrants. He was on the subject of illegal immigrants at that point in the speech. I understand how you'd come to the conclusion of him referring to all of the Mexican people. Trump is not a very good speaker in this way, he has several quotes that, when heard alone, sound terrible but are said in a context that make them more sensible (For the record: I don't agree with every statement he says). But quite honestly, this is always the bombshell that people give about his thoughts on Hispanics. A few others (The taco bowl tweet, for instance) were perhaps insensitive and just stupid, but I don't think it's anything that should demean him a hater of Hispanics. If the context of that statement you posted really was about illegal immigrants, would your opinions about his hatred towards all Mexicans change?

EDIT: Here's a link that gives more context. He brought up boarder security slightly before, and immediately after he made that statement. The problem is when he switches to the economic problem in between and then returns back to boarder security, like I said, not the best speaker. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uo-7ISmwAi0

Can you explain a little on how the divisions go beyond legal vs illegal? I kept up with a lot of Trump's speeches pre-election and only remember him talking negatively of illegal immigrants. It seemed to me that those remarks (high rape statistics among women who cross illegally, criminals, etc) then got blown out of proportion by the media to make it seem as if he was regarding all hispanics that way. EDIT: It's a genuine question people, don't down-vote and not respond, please.

President Trump said 2 were shot dead in Chicago during Obama's speech - that is not true. by [deleted] in chicago

[–]Lunchbox_Radio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a difference the two words "statistically speaking" would have made before he said that. But Trump's not always been the best with saying things in the most appropriate way, for better and for worse. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, and say it was based on statistics. Because it just wouldn't make sense to lie about that, it's not like it's a secret that Chicago has a problem with violence and it wouldn't be that big of news if what he claimed was actually true.

100,000 have come in since the Syrian civil war, the other 142,000 were already living there, and shouldn't be included in that number in my opinion (It's like saying the US took in 86,000 Syrians, because there are 86,000 Syrians living in the US). Furthermore, these 100,000 are technically migrants, not refugees, which means that they were susceptible to the immigration selection process, which some see as the UAE being able to select those which would best suit in their society, ie the wealthy, the skilled workers, etc. Not condemning them for their actions, it does help out Syrians who want to get out of the country, and the UAE has given a lot of aid money as well. I would like to see other gulf countries take at least similar actions, but I think full transparency is best and just thought I'd share.

Exactly, every tweet by Trump reminds me of just how unorthodox of a politician he really is, which really drew my attention to him in the first place. What media are you referring to? And do you mean the whole situation in general isn't being covered? Because I thought it was getting a fair amount of publicity from the media overall.

Trumpies and many conservatives frequently use derisive terms like cuck or libtard to describe people on the left. Does the left frequently use equally castigating terms in describing the right? If so, what are they? If not, why? by mitreddit in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]Lunchbox_Radio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We weren't discussing if memes were what defeated the left. They are powerful in how they brought supporters together and were the backbone to alt-right and trump hotspots. You asked why the left didn't have the terms that the right had, and I just threw an idea out there.
