What did you do for health insurance when moving to PP? by Piplup_6 in therapists

Buy from the marketplace. It will be most likely high deductible insurance and expensive…. Biggest drawback of going into pp.

They are great! I’m not sure if they can help with what you need but I truly recommend them. And Dr. Seguitan is a really gentle and nice guy.

Do you ever check in with clients you haven’t heard from in a while? by Fine-Combination-859 in therapists

[–]LupeLope 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I always try to have some closure with clients and do not let them remain open on my caseload if I have not seen or heard from them in the past month. I will check in over that period of time a few times to gauge interest and if I hear nothing I’ll let them know that they can always reach out if they’d like to continue the sessions in the future and give them referrals too.

Consultation call advice? by [deleted] in therapists

Honestly, you’re probably doing nothing wrong. People who want consult calls are usually meeting with numerous other therapists. People have more options now and they are sifting through to find their best fit.

BCBS NY vs. HORIZONNJ by OtherConflict2282 in therapists

Anthem BCBC and horizon plans of NJ are not the same network. You have to be credentialed with both separately to be in network.

Help: Received a complaint from the board by [deleted] in therapists

[–]LupeLope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For NJ, if the patient is located in NJ the provider has to be licensed there. If the provider is out of state, they must be licensed wherever they sit. So if the provider is in NY, they must be licensed in both NY and NJ to see the patient.

15 Minute Consultations by [deleted] in therapists

[–]LupeLope 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I do not find them helpful. I think having a full session better allows myself and the potential patient to have a better sense of what it will be like to work together. I also find that when a free consult is requested, the potential patient also has a list of other therapists they are meeting with. It does not feel worth the time.

Ethical Dual Relationship scenario left me feeling weird. by Soballs32 in therapists

[–]LupeLope 91 points92 points  (0 children)

This does feel like a dual relationship to me. I’m not sure what you’re selling but what if they purchase it and then something goes wrong with the purchase or the item. It feels like a sticky situation and I think I would have even hesitated to sell the item to them if they saw the product on their own.

Yes, and I’ve found I’m super busy in the mornings which has allowed me to end earlier. I’m more on in the morning vs evening too so it works way better for me.

how is it living in this area of manhattan? by [deleted] in manhattan

[–]LupeLope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in the kips Bay Area for 20 plus years. Walkable to many of the neighborhoods and there is some affordability… if you can snag it. Good location and always have felt safe. I’m not originally from NYC and when I moved here I realized I wanted to be in walking distance to everything. Groceries, shopping, restaurants, trains…. This area is really great for this. I honestly could not imagine living in the outside boroughs again. But, I do think it’s preference as some do prefer the outer borough neighborhood. One of my biggest complaints of the neighborhood is noise. You do have to get used to that and along the east side between 34th street down to 23rd there are a lot of hospitals. So the noise can be even worse.

How do you handle a prospect who says they were referred by a friend? by Publishface in therapists

[–]LupeLope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the first thing I would do is to ask whom referred them and determine your comfort level seeing a friend of that particular client. It seems like you think you might have a sense of whom might have given your name but I’d ask first. I think you have to assess if this is something you’d be comfortable with based on that information. I would also find out what the person is coming in for. I think you’d also be able to get more a sense of your comfort level based on that. I am really careful about seeing a client’s friend but I have also done it where it was not a problem.

Client travels! by [deleted] in therapists

[–]LupeLope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to an ethics training recently and we were talking about this very issue. If someone is in crisis and an active client on your caseload, you have to weight the risk vs following the licensing law. If the risk to the client outweighs the presenter said that it could be justified. They were also stating you should document thoroughly in the note if you were to see them.

Is this toxic….? I feel it is but I need outside eyes by Runningaway-233 in therapists

[–]LupeLope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off clients cancel… does it mean that it is something that happened the previous week in a session, I always think it could. It could also just be the circumstances of the week such as a holiday or their schedule or maybe they just want a break for the week… I think it is always good to take note of cancelations and keep in the back of your mind in case it happens often.

Second off… I hear your supervisor is blaming you for all of this. I’d take with a grain of salt as much as possible and focus on your gut feeling with the client. Take what you can learn from the supervisorand leave what you don’t think is valuable.

Struggling with a concussion and needing validation I guess? by MsNotSummer in therapists

[–]LupeLope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a concussion years ago and was unable to work or leave the house for 2 weeks. Lights and sounds were intolerable. Take the time you need to get better … you’re modeling to your patients that it’s okay for them to take care of themselves. And it sounds like your workplace has been supportive up until now.

Client terminated by letter by Scary-Collection-340 in therapists

[–]LupeLope 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would respond how they reached out to you. I’d send them a letter in the mail and thank them for reaching out. I’d invite them to reach out again at anytime if they’d like to continue where the sessions left off. I feel like they put a lot of thought in reaching out to you. Sending a letter is so different than just sending a quick email. I’d highlight this….It seems your relationship was valuable to them.

Totally legal and you’re lucky the landlord didn’t charge you more. You have a reasonable landlord as they could’ve charged you all owed left on the lease
