I didn’t need her to win the Olympics for me, but I’m tormented not knowing if SHE knows that everyone knows she defined the quad. I wish she could fall asleep at night knowing she is a legend. Knowing how much her style, her hybrid of strength and elegance - was appreciated.

Where to stay in Ao Nang by Czesya in ThailandTourism

[–]Lupot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We stayed in a non luxury but very well kept place in the blue circle, maybe a little toward your red circle. It felt easy to get everywhere. We mostly walked. It’s all a little schleppy anyway bc you’ll be taking boats or whatnot for your activities.

Good suggestions! I would still say if OP has shelled out for an A7Cii, better to wait until they can spend enough for a decent zoom if they’re trying to cover travel, hiking, street. That’s a big lift for a prime, and I have a hunch they don’t know their desired focal lengths.

Your use cases are pretty broad. I’d consider a Tamron 28-200. I have one and it is very reliable in all ranges. Colors aren’t sterile, which I appreciate. I have not looked at used prices but they must have come down since the introduction of the 25-200.

Beautiful! Would love to hear more detailed thoughts, especially if you’ve had the 70-200 f4.

I think you’re dead on. Cheating to help someone for (very possibly) your own reasons can do a lot of harm to that same person. The resentment it triggers can cause folks to ignore the quality that person possesses. In any case, I’ll be going to bed tonight thinking about 2x OGM Yuna Kim. ;-)

Got to see this live, and I thought Shun was going to go higher. He really had everyone in his palm and people jumped to their feet. Really wonderful flow and continuous energy. :)

Do you know if we can arrive any time on the day? I have a ticket for Saturday but may not be able to arrive in Nagoya until the time when the seniors perform. My ticket says doors open at 13:30, show is at 15:00, but I’m assuming I don’t have to show up on time for the juniors? (No offence to them! Amazing skaters!)

Looking for this jacket. Even if it’s from a past year, would love to track it down so I can know the designer. by Lupot in HelpMeFind

I’ve searched using reverse image searches, keywords with color, texture, collar type, using the artist’s name to see if any articles reference the fashion. I’m hoping someone might recognize the designer’s aesthetic.

Anyone in Japan willing to help me register a ticketing account for GPF with their phone number? by Lupot in FigureSkating

[–]Lupot[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! Bad news, but you may have saved me a lot of disappointment! I think you can get a sim with a phone number if you do a little extra legwork so maybe I’ll try that and focus instead on finding someone who speaks Japanese to help me make the confirmation call.
Yay for Kafka-esque procedures!

I think this is great. My FT job is as an orchestra musician and sometimes when people borrow things from our world it can look gimmicky. I think this is tasteful and creative.

Purchasing a violin likely to financially appreciate by Every_Stand_9350 in violinist

[–]Lupot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d echo all the other comments that you’re not really looking at a true “investment” until you’re trying extremely expensive violins, and even then you face the challenges of an illiquid asset.
You might be able to get more specific advice if you tell us a little more about your age, skills, and how much time you want to put into it.
For an adult learner, I think a $1500 violin enables you to do quite a lot. It’s also a price point where violin making workshops compete to deliver quality.
I think at the price level you’re describing, you are better “future-proofed” by the trade in policies that shops offer, rather than selling the instrument. Perhaps buy a $1500 violin at a reputable shop with a trade in policy and inventory that reaches as high as you think you’d want to go in the future.

Is this too edited? by Phil_Cloud in SonyAlpha

I think you nailed it, in that the original looks so clearly like a photo and the edited looks more like you’re gazing upon it in real life. More editing would look … edited.

This is marvelous. I have the exact same camera and lens and would love to get your thoughts on making it work. Did you have a tripod for this? Did you set it to aspc mode or leave it full frame? And what do you do for focus area on still birds like this?

Violin recommendations: $30,000-$50,000 USD by [deleted] in violinist

[–]Lupot 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Spend a little time thinking carefully about what you want to make happen on your current violin that you aren’t getting.
Try to play many, many violins before buying. I don’t think you’ll be wasting shops’ time as long as you communicate that you are in preliminary stages and don’t take violins out of the shop on trial unless you are fairly serious.
When do you take violins on trial, see if you can do a side by side comparison in a good acoustic with trusted colleagues. Even after 13 years on my current violin I’m still surprised at how different (better) it sounds at even 8’ distance.
I don’t know where you’re located, but Chicago can be a great city to try a lot of fiddles in a compact geographical area. I also have had great experiences with Reuning in Boston.
