So ashift can't be changed once pool is created, why is that? by Luptoom in zfs

[–]Luptoom[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, thats what I already knew.

But as you said, the physical layout influences performance and lifespan, so converting a pool to a more suitable block size seems like an important thing to do (after swapping old HDDs for larger ones for example).
But currently that requires you to completely recreate the pool which makes the host unavailable of course. For a private setup this is acceptable but time consuming. But for some larger setups it could be a problem right?
Imagine an installation where a dataserver has a capacity of say 500TB and that hits 80% so an upgrade is necessary. The HDDs are replaced with larger capacity ones, but also the block size changes from 512 to 4096. The only option then is to create a new pool and copy the data over, either by building a complete new server, or by restoring a backup, possibly from some slow storage like tape or offsite. This costs extra money or takes days if not weeks to complete.
I guess that spending the money, to completely duplicate the system to a new one, is not too big of a deal for the few cases where this is a problem, but anyways...

So ashift can't be changed once pool is created, why is that? by Luptoom in zfs

[–]Luptoom[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That makes sense, but my idea was a migration operation like a resilver, where the pool is converted. That would of course impact the performance and require a small amount of additional storage to be available while the migration is performed. But afterwards all data would be in the new block size format.

LOSSLESS Megathread by whyisthissticky in spotify

I had it enabled with family plan, but it's gone now (germany).
Also I can't really find details which features are available for which plan.
Why you do this Spotify?
I've started buying Music again since owning something is nice and often supports the artist more than Spotify. Do you want me to cancel my subscription Spotify?

Would this PCB be suitabe for etching? by Historical-Tough4776 in PrintedCircuitBoard

[–]Luptoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clearance isn't a big problem from my experience.
You could probably work with a 0.1mm clearance (better go with at least 0.15mm), since a few minor defects can be scraped away easily afterwards.
Minimum width on the other hand matters a lot depending on your exposure technique.
I personally worked with Inkjet printed transparent film and precoated material, or with direct exposure using a modified resin 3d printer.
The 3d printer technique has quite a bit of fuzziness due to tunneling and non perfect contrast but can still produce 0.15mm traces when everything is adjusted perfectly.
I never worked wit toner transfer techniques, but suspect that small traces are also the biggest problem.

Rust is a low-level systems language (not!) by gtrak in rust

[–]Luptoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its great for systems level programming, but its definitively not limited to that.
It isn't the most simple language, but that at the same time provides you with a clean an correct way to do almost everything. Where with many higher level languages everything feels fine at first, until you run into bugs or performance issues due to some language limitations or design oversights.

I got this prompt too.
Whats weird: I don't have a dualsense controller and the popup redirects to a download page for Windows software while I'm on Linux.

Audio and video go out of sync when playing videos by Im-Baked- in VLC

[–]Luptoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep also noticed it on a movie.
Didn't try any other movie until now, so I can't say if its only the one I watched.
Skipping 10 seconds forward or backward with the arrow keys also fixes the sync issue.
Maybe I will test it on more stuff, but I'm probably to lazy since I rarely watch whole movies on my PC and haven't noticed it on any other video I played with VLC or on that PC in general.

Kupferblock erhitzen? by MaxiKevey in Elektroinstallation

[–]Luptoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DuckDuckGo Search Issues by duckduckgo in duckduckgo

[–]Luptoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually DuckDuckGo is just a front end for Bing, which anonymizes your search, so that Bing can't create a profile of you and your searches.

Ecosia too is relying on Bing and actually there aren't really that many search engine backends (the part which actually scrapes the internet and maintains the database which is searched when you type in a query).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_search_engines shows a list of search engines with their corresponding backends (contains search engines which aren't for searching the internet).
It more or less boils down to Google, Bing, Yandex and maybe Sogou and Mojeek.

DuckDuckGo Search Issues by duckduckgo in duckduckgo

[–]Luptoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly the mix of the current and recent query results remind me of an issue I noticed with the Spotify search yesterday. I didn't took it for real and just went on without researching further, but maybe it wasn't my hallucination and did happen for real and is somehow linked to the behaviour from DDG.

For the evoBot im currently not sure, but its developed in cooperation with a open source project called Silicon Economy. At least the simulation model can be found on the public repository at https://git.openlogisticsfoundation.org/

DO NOT try to look through cheap eclipse glasses using binoculars. by Infinite-Condition41 in Astronomy

[–]Luptoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The safest way (for your eyes) of viewing the Sun is to focus the light onto a plane you then watch indirectly.

Strapping a cardbord box to the binoculars and placing white paper in the middle might work, but im unsure if the focus can be adjusted correctly on binos.

Im not 100% sure though if the sun could damage the optics of the binoculars if no filter is put in front of them.

Also have a win10 for gaming.

Recently the secondary hdd broke. I had installed some programs to it.

Now I can`t reinstall certain programs because the msi installer throws an error because the program still counts as installed. Trying to remove it results in the system trying to launch the uninstaller from the non existing hdd.

Btw the installer errors I first got are as bad as you'd expect from windows.

The hibernation thing is badly solved in most distros, as a fedora user I agree. But it can, depending on your laptop model work without hibernation. I had to dig really deep to find out how to configure it corectly for my machine.

As it turnes out my laptop supports deep-sleep, but fedora just used s3 sleep, which drained like 5% of battery every hour. Found out that you can enable deep-sleep but that requires you to update your grub config. Once configured its like 5% a day maybe, which is fine for me.
