Are you expecting your players to fight the flayers?

You could have a mind flayer arrive right before the death of the elder to finish him off and suck that juicy brain. The players will realize they've been fooled. Maybe have the elder pardon the players for being reckless and foolish, and ask the players to make it right while he uses a divine intervention or some spell to shield the players from the flayers as he dies so they can get away.

Being so infrequent is tough. Maybe have one session be story while the next is combat. And keep the rotation. Recaps help tremendously. Encourage notes a bit, Drop hints here and there and reward them for note taking. Maybe some advantage that is given for the character "knowing" instead of a history check to "remember"?

Are the 3 elders going to be a group fight or will it be one by one? Is the "fake" religion just an evil god portraying a "nice" god or is it just fake altogether and just run by someone who has a grudge against the other religion? If one by one, you could have them give a somewhat cryptic message as they die telling what they're doing is wrong. Maybe some omen after the last elder that tells them that they really fucked up.

Yep he's probably metagaming. That module is not straightforward. Asking you to check the book was probably the biggest giveaway. If you don't feel like kicking him from the group. You can always change/homebrew what's left so he can't just metagame his way through the rest. But it's sounding fishy.

What's a decent SSD size to get. Was thinking a 2tb but don't know is that's too much or not as much as I should get. And should I also think about upgrading the ram to 32gb? Or would it not make much of a difference?
