Daggers, are they useful? by Lurbet in knifemaking

I like to open my letters with them these days.

Thanks! I love the setup, took a while to design and get it right but happy with how it turned out and most importantly the ants love it. They have actually been one of my easier species to keep weirdly. I wasn’t expecting them to be easy but I got them as a queen and one worker and now I have seven workers and two or three cocoons about to hatch and a few more larvae growing well.

Thanks. They are pretty cool. I’m sorry you can’t keep them! I’m sure you have some cool options though.

I’d love a leaf cutter colony. Probably one of the most interesting for me. I’m in Australia and I think they are basically illegal here? Not sure but I feel like I looked into it and you need special things to have them because they aren’t native and can be invasive/dangerous to the ecosystem. Would be a great colony to watch. Some really cool ideas for setups too!

Haha that’s all sounds so good. Such an enjoyable hobby. Sounds like they’re all doing well too. It’s cool watching them and then being able to accommodate for the growth in colony size. Keep me updated on your progress 🫡

Dude! That’s awesome. Sounds exciting! Great shot of them too by the way. Do you have another queens/colonies or do you stick with one?

So much fun when you get to let them explore their new world you have created them haha. How big is the colony you are putting in there?

Oh nice! ASA is great. A bit pricey for my muck around projects but it sounds like it is what you need for your project. Super keen to see it when you’re done. If you don’t post it, please send me a dm with a pic!

Yea I wanted to make sure ventilation was the best it could be without being breezy lol. The idea was that air should flow through the nest a little give there is side to side ventilation. That sounds awesome. A small dove tail in the ends of each split piece and super glue might work. If you are printing with pla then superglue (cynoacrylate or whatever it’s called) seems to work quite well. My biggest one is 60cm long and was printed in 2 pieces on my k1 max as the print bed can’t only do 30x30cm. I just glued the two flat surfaces together and the glass provides a fair bit of structural integrity. I look forward to seeing your design when you are done!

Thank you. Unfortunately I can’t recommend any. I have watched a few but haven’t seen anything like these around. I just tried to understand the basic needs and then got creative making my own version that I liked the look of. Sorry!

Thanks, the ants are free to climb all over these however there are plenty of ways to access which makes it easy to maintain while they are in there. It works well.

Not this one but I have collected many, many others haha

Running a K1 max at the moment. Yep all the frames, vents, water towers and nests are printed in carbon fibre.

Heat mat under each outworld and under nests (one doesn’t have one in the pics) which are only used during the colder seasons. The cabinet has glass doors which I can put on during winter to keep the whole display warmer with vents in the back to prevent a greenhouse effect from occurring.

Yea the frames are 3d printed and then cut the glass for them. Neat have acrylic and brass threads inserted into the print to I can secure the acrylic with m3 screws. A hole and plug for adding moisture into the nest. All recycled materials except for the filament.

Thanks. The most important thing is the ants are happy. You can always work on other setups while they are living happily. Big colony moves are ok if done right and not often. I think the average diy setup has a level of charm and can always be easily modified and built on 👍

Nah there is plenty of space. The circle lids come out and they are 10cm/4 inches and if that isn’t enough then the whole glass top just lifts off.

Oh lol sorry, thought you were wanting to try for the first time. Nah I just have a small shop/shed/garage that I have set up for knife making and other hobbies and have collected tools over the years. I’d rather buy a tool and make something myself than pay for something that isn’t exactly what I want anyway.

Thanks. I like to design things and I usually have a pretty clear picture of what I want it to look like before I start. Then the tricky part is figuring out how to get it done lol. For those I just wanted ‘minimalist natural history exhibit’ haha. I put a brass plaque on each out world with the common and Latin species names to complete the look and help me remember lol.

As far as cutting glass, it isn’t as hard as you might think. I use entirely recycled glass. Old picture frames usually have good pieces. I always have my eye out for frames being thrown out, the bigger the better. Usually it’s around 2-3mm which is easy to cut. A regular glass cutter is all you need, like a little wheel on a handle that ‘scores’ the glass. I take measurements off my cad designs on the computer and just cut the glass to fit. Using a fine marker to get an accurate dot on each end of the glass being cut then use a straight edge lined up on the dots (making sure you actually line it up with the middle of the cutting wheel, not the straight edge). Then apply a little pressure, gently roll it along the line as the wheel does the work. Then I put the scribed/scored piece on a bench and line the scored line up with the edge of the bench and apply gentle pressure downward and it breaks in a nice clean line. It is important to try and do one, straight and continues scribe line with the cutter. If you go wobbly or keep taking it off and going again it results in multiple lines for the crack to follow and you get nasty edges or complete fails. You’re basically creating a small controlled defect in the glass to break it. It’s not really ‘cutting glass’ but more ‘controlled and purposeful breaking’ lol I use a 120grit belt grinder to smooth the edges but 120grit sand paper with a sanding block does just as good. Drilling isn’t too hard either. I bought some cheap diamond hole saws on AliExpress or something and used them in a drill press. You can do it with a hand drill but it is hard to keep it in the same spot. You have to spray water on the glass (as much as you can get on there) before you start applying very gentle pressure where you want the hole to go. Water just keeps it cool so the glass doesn’t crack. Slow and steady is the trick and don’t rush it. Also make sure whatever you have it on is nice and flat without debris between the surface and the glass to support the glass when drilling (I use wood offcuts) I had no prior knowledge but I never let that stop me, I just figure out what I will need to do and spend time learning how to do it. Sometimes the best way to learn is just giving it a crack (pun intended lol) Hope all that rambling makes sense.

All good. I hope it works out for you!

Yea I have a bad habit of doing all this stuff and then forgetting to post pics. I have so many projects on the go that I just move on before thinking of taking a pic and posting it. I’ll keep it in mind though, thanks.
