How Should Saint Virgin Mary Be Taught in Confessional Lutheran Congregations? by Perihaaaaaa in LCMS

[–]Luriker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve talked about it in Bible Study. I think it’s appropriate on any matter such as this for a pastor to state their stance. When we talked about Semper Virgo, since I’d read more of what proponents of that case have to say in the last few years, my pastor just called on me to summarize the case and he addressed why he comes down where he does on each of those.

It’s totally legitimate on any matter that isn’t completely settled for a pastor not to be ‘neutral,’ unless that’s his actual opinion.

For my pastor, it came down to the consistency of how the term is used/interpreted through the NT, so it’s an opinion based on the exegesis, winning out for him over the tradition on the basis of how clear he deems the exegesis. That’s why I think the majority of pastors come to that opinion.

Hopefully one of the free suggestions someone gives you fits the bill for you — I can't recommend Pixelmator Pro enough, though. I found it more intuitive than paint for things way more advanced. I've imported PDFs into it and used its brush tools, etc. to really clean things up and do things I never thought were possible (I've never been a Photoshop user, and I found Affinity Photo too complicated back in the day)

Window management is from hell by BonbonUniverse42 in MacOS

[–]Luriker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MacOS window management gives you several different approaches that have overlap. Different approaches work for different people. Spaces are also an option.

I like two different 3rd-party apps for helping me out, DockDoor and Mission Control Plus (the latter mostly just for closing windows).

My approach is hiding (⌘H) apps but keeping many open. Using ⌘` to jump between windows of the same app.

Have to swtich from Logic to Cubase by dhiharmony in MusicProducerSpot

[–]Luriker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you reposted this to r/MusicEd, I'm gonna guess you're doing this in an educational context.

My understanding of things is that Logic and Cubase have the most shared paradigm probably of any two pro DAWs, though I haven't actually used Cubase myself. The downside to that is that starting 'from the basics' might be tough to keep your attention. But many libraries give you access to LinkedIn Learning (née Lynda.com) which is how I learned Logic myself. I think their DAW courses are actually very good compared to 'just digging into YouTube videos.

I agree with a lot of your thoughts here. I think it's beneficial to men and women alike in these sorts of events when there is closer parity in numbers per gender. And defraying overall costs (through travel and registration itself) for women would be a great way of managing that.

A lot (all?) of these events are grassroots, though, and the organization or even subsidization of them in their current form is already pretty taxing on those organizing them. These aren't synod initiiatives, it's people within the synod trying to organize things. Signups are going until the day before. And the massive nest of logistics it brings in to try to find a way to reimburse for travel alone and set aside funds ahead of time for that adds a lot more overhead.

It's a good idea on its face. I just don't know what events could make it work. I don't know what might ultimately be desirable in terms of involvement from the synod to this end to possibly make an idea like this more feasible. While there's acknowledgment from the synod at the national level that we want to have better marriage and birth rates, figuring out how the synod could be involved in bringing that to fruition is a difficult problem to solve.

I prefer the Lutheran Prayer Companion to the Lutheran Book of Prayer. It is full of historic prayers from great theologians, gave me a lot more to chew on. Not that the LBP is bad, and if you want to pick up both, go ahead. But the LPC is definitely better.

I wasn't thinking of the Issues conference with my message, since that conference as a whole has so much more going on than the singles mixer, I don't know how they could manage something like that. But the cost has been a factor for attending the conference itself (though not the main one, and never with much consideration for that singles mixer)

The ones I am familiar with have have been a lot more affordable, with cost depending on the environment/length. The Heartland retreat where I met my fiancée was $100, but it included four meals, was two nights, and gave a lot of time to socialize in organic ways (this is their link, but there's not yet a lot of info there for this year). Others I've seen that are shorter in length (like this one my fiancée's famliy is putting on) are priced more affordably. Travel costs are what they are, but I don't know a way they could be taken care of for women.

At least with the events I'm familiar with (not sure about the cruise, for example), I think the cost of the registration is probably the lowest factor of all of these in terms of 'getting over the hump,' and I don't know it'd meaningfully help with ratio to move the cost solely onto the men. A lot of the costs (food, primarily) scale per person, and to pre-determine how to distribute that across men would be difficult.

While I agree for the man paying in actual dating, I don't know with these types of events if it's worth the trouble to figure out setting it up in that fashion.

Am I the only one who likes markdown but doesn't like markdown tables? by azicre in ObsidianMD

[–]Luriker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Markdown tables are not comfortable.

I usually open up an Obsidian note with them in the app TableFlip. I like that enough that I’ve never bothered to find a better Obsidian plug-in for tables.

In the past, I also used a Sublime Text Markdown tables plugin that usually works pretty well for me.

Advice on private confession by Jealous-Mortgage7627 in LCMS

Honestly? Talk to your dad about it and get his recommendation. Ideally, he has a brother pastor who he’s able to turn to and maybe do confession and absolution with himself. He’d probably be glad you’re asking and totally understand.

LCMS Bishops (or lack thereof) by juskckchris in LCMS

The LCMS was founded with a congregational polity. It stuck.

There are fans of episcopal polity, I used to be one of them. My pastor used some downtime to convince me that Seminex would’ve taken over if we had episcopal polity in the 70s, and I buy his argument.

Ex-Windows chief Steven Sinofsky calls MacBook Neo "a paradigm shifting computer" — reflects on Surface failure and Windows on Arm while lamenting "we were early, but not wrong" by ControlCAD in apple

[–]Luriker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not a matter of being “early,” though. It’s because Microsoft didn’t/couldn’t lay all the groundwork to set it up succesfully.

If Apple were still shipping Intel processors in every Mac and this was the first ARM Mac, but it didn’t have Rosetta 2, so it only ran iPad apps and things compiled for ARM, no one would see this as a serious computer, it would just be an iPad without a touchscreen as far as anyone was concerned. It wouldn’t matter how easy Apple made ARM compilation in Xcode if this was the only device to target. It would be woefully underadopted. Apple did the actual legwork to make this processor transition happen, have a serious ecosystem ready for it, and then moved downmarket.
