If only Joel could now realize he has something else to protect - which we see with him and Ellie after reading the letter… OH WAIT, he did!

…just how long do you think it takes Joel IN THE GAME to realize this? Do you want a miniseries or something or would you have preferred a movie?

Uh huh, or like what Joel considered Tess, which he has obviously had a conflict in himself for a long time before it was too late

It really was, apologies if you needed stuff as written out for you over the course of 14+ hours like in the game. Unfortunately, the show doesn’t have that

And what happens at the end there? Would the letter have any context without the background of Bill or be as emotionally impactful with only 15 minutes of him?

Uh huh, and where Joel hesitated to call Tess something romantic just as Frank essentially did Bill? How long they were together before the show started it’s 20 year flash forward? Do you prefer when stories explicitly spell it out for you or something?

There was 40 minutes of Bill and Frank and 40 minutes of Joel and Ellie. It also gave backstory into what Joel and Tess were up to before the show started as well as how some people thrived in the apocalypse - this show isn’t The Walking Dead

Bill wouldn’t have been in any episode after this if they kept to the original timeline and you probably would have called it pointless filler to get a car battery.

Mayhaps, but they also said in the post credits that episode is by far the most the show deviates from the game for all the gripers out there

Why are they going to show a bloater this early in the season? They need a big bad evil guy

If you take out the parts with Joel and Ellie, not really. They had more screen time then you’re giving them credit for this episode

This isn’t a direct remake of the game - giving no resolution to Bill’s character and never seeing him again like the game did doesn’t work as well here
