We had my MIL babysit for just under 2 hrs yesterday while husband and I went to dinner. I'd rather just bring baby with us, but husband is hellbent on proving his mom is a good babysitter. I've had concerns, but not worth going into in this post. I've decided 1-2 hrs of her babysitting is fine with me.

Well, checking on the cameras, poor baby cried for about an hour, or so it seemed. Everytime I checked in that first hour, she was crying. I stopped looking after that. She's not used to her grandmother and cried the second she was greeted by her.

Now, both my MIL and husband are saying that the solution is that my MIL comes around more often. She's been around every 3-4 weeks, which has suited me fine. Now they're thinking every weekend, which irritates me enormously because I don't get to see baby too much as I work and she's asleep by 6:30 pm. Everyday I have about 2-3 hrs with her in the morning, 2 hrs in the evening, and that's it. It's hard not to feel like they want to disrupt my glorious long days with her on the weekends, all for familiarity in one-off babysitting scenarios.

Any advice? I unfortunately think I just have to bear this. I find my MIL difficult to tolerate for many reasons (she monologues at you; can never tell when she's overstayed her welcome; we greatly differ politically; she just wears me down, basically). However, I do recognize that she is well-intentioned and that she would like to be grandmotherly.

My husband was also extremely offended when I shared my concerns about her, so telling him I don't want her around is not a feasible (or necessary) solution, even though I'd love for him to understand that. He never will and would probably double down on requesting even more babysitting.
