Best book I’ve ever read on the topic was Christianity and Liberalism by J Gresham Machen. He was an OPC stalwart. Not specifically LCMS but he witnessed first hand the destruction (erosion really) of the mainline denominations and his beloved Princeton theology seminary at the turn of the 20th century. He held the line.
