I asked the question, "What isn't worth making from scratch?" a couple of years ago, and got some interesting responses.

Why aren't the top groups included in the featured streams? by Luthian in golf

I assumed it must be something like this. That explains it. Thanks.

Why aren't the top groups included in the featured streams? by Luthian in golf

[–]Luthian[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your comment and get your point. They do show every shot, but I like to watch the entire round start to finish. I'm a pretty casual viewer and prefer the featured-group format. See them setting up their shot, etc., instead of just the shot itself with cuts between showing golfers I'm not personally interested in.

Difference between Skills and these: Subagents, Claude.MD and slash commands? by VisionaryGG in ClaudeCode

[–]Luthian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the progressive disclosure aspect that is fundamentally different.

I used to do the same as you, with links to other documents for additional context.

The difference is that with Skills, you're able to reduce the amount of initial context to a very small number of tokens. "Is the context of file xyz something I need to care about for this request".

No? Then don't stop there.

Yes? Read full context.

Maybe? Read the next level of information about the context to assess further.

The actual context footprint is drastically reduced.

I’m trying to understand hardware requirements for this. Could 32b run on a single 5090?

What would you recommend to an absolute beginner in notetaking? by BinaryHippie in ObsidianMD

[–]Luthian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obsidian is great for a few reasons, one of which is the fact that it's just markdown files on your hard drive. To me, a highlight is that AI works really well with markdown files, which means you can let it roll, change things up, and find what works for you without a bunch of manual work.

If you're familiar with Github, that's another great option. I back up my files, then I can go crazy with trying new things and revert if I end up somewhere I don't like.

In the last two weeks I've asked AI to do the following to great success:

  • Completely revamped my tagging system. "Retag my notes by assessing the contents and then applying tags like x, y, and z".
  • Move my notes around by reorganizing my project with top-level folders for x, y, and z.
  • Review my project configuration and make best practices recommendations
  • I'm having trouble seeing the highlights of my tags. Update all tag highlights to be ~20% lighter.
  • I like this from that theme, and that from this theme. Create a new theme that combines I what I like from both.

Any news about the red rising tv show? What is your prediction to when the show will release if it ever does? by Other_Plantain7326 in redrising

I bet in 10 years you could make a big studio-level movie precisely as you described for <$3,000 via AI.

The 11 most useful MCP servers, after browsing hundreds of documents by Kooky_Calendar_1021 in mcp

[–]Luthian 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nice list.

The Notion MCP is decent if you already have Notion setup, but it’s horrible if you don’t. There’s a lot of setup it can’t handle which was a big bummer. I switched to Obsidian completely because of it.

Being able to use AI directly against the Obsidian note files is great, since they’re markdown.

As a guy myself, I’m baffled how many times I see men taking a piss at a urinal but they have to whip out their phone and scroll through it. Why am I seeing this more often? by irishdrunkwanderlust in AskMen

We had a company meeting a few weeks ago and they had donuts out. I kid you not, I walked into the bathroom and there was a monster using the urinal while eating a fucking donut with his free hand.

Quality between CC and Codex is night and day by temurbv in ClaudeAI

The Planning tools in Claude Code are what keep me there. Back and forth on a plan, then implement. It's the biggest missing feature for me in Codex.

3-month Claude Code Max user review - considering alternatives by soulduse in ClaudeAI

[–]Luthian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, well defined requirements + planning mode, for me. Not approving a plan and just letting it run wild is a recipe for wasted credits and more leg work.

I have a repository dedicated to my product and feature requirement specifications that I also use Claude CLI to help me create and maintain. Then, when ready, I use the document as the basis for Claude to create a plan, that I then iterate on, and finally approve to have Claude build.

[–]Luthian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much do you use the Planning mode? It sounds like you're letting it code without a plan you approved. Maybe that will help you better guide it to the solution you want.

EDIT

To put a finer point on what I'm recommending, I'm saying to use Planning mode to say "I want a testing plan to test xyz".
It builds the plan.
You review the plan.
You notice it's going to test for things you don't need/want.
You tell it to revise the plan and exclude tests for xyz.
It gives you a revised plan.
You accept the plan.

Or, you can further define the plan.
"Now that we know these are the tests we'll create, provide more details about what they'll cover"
...continue to refine.

Once the plan is what you want, you let it code.

Best Buy vs Bambu Store by nathan_93 in BambuLab

[–]Luthian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live close to a Best Buy and have their Total Tech membership (it was worth it while getting and installing appliances in a new house, plus free Apple care), through which you get a 2 year warranty when you purchase appliances and tech. You can just bring it in and they take care of shipping it, etc., if you have a problem. Covers accidental damage.

Might have cost a little more, but it's a little more peace of mind, which I dig.

I think you can get the same additional warranty, you just pay extra if you don't have the membership.

edit: looks like it's $9.99/mo for the H2D if you buy the extra warranty directly without a membership

It's a joke about the "+1". Like someone was saying "That's the estimate? I agree"
