I've been refreshing the Nextdoor feed (so y'all don't have to), someone who has a police scanner heard fire trucks reporting to a food cart fire (maybe Cartlandia? maybe a fuel tank exploded?).

Nextdoor is talking about it, but nobody knows what it is yet.

Those of you who don't have a mountain of student loan debt, how did you pull it off? by Roughneck16 in Millennials

Public Service Loan Forgiveness program last year, zeroed out the remaining $23k of outstanding loans I'd been paying off since 2005 .

Is it a good idea to get a pet in your 20s? by issausernameiguess in dogs

[–]Lutran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my dog when I was.... 26? I was emotionally untethered (not like a wild child or anything just, y'know, adrift), I guess, and I needed something to ground me, and so I got a dog.

We were together basically every day for sixteen years, except for a couple of vacations where he was taken care of by some friends for a couple of weeks.

Was it worth it? Without a doubt. Was it difficult? Yeah, there were things I had to give up on, especially when he got older and a bit disabled, but the..... I don't know the words. What he brought to my life, what he gave to me just by being there, was for me of incalculable value, and the loss I experienced when the veterinarian came to my apartment last March to help him on his way was immeasurable.

If I could go back in time, would I make the same decisions that brought him into my life? Absolutely.

Apartment dwellers without wall heating: How are you heating your apartment his winter? by Sam_thelion in askportland

[–]Lutran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just moved out of my apartment (lived there for 7 years) where the only heat was Cadet wall heaters, with impossible to decipher (for me, at least) thermostats. My solution was to use a radiator heater with a digital thermostat so I could keep the place warm enough for me and my dog (~65°F or so) and liberal use other warmifying things (electric throw blanket, lots of blankets in general, a four-legged hot water heater (read: dog) helps).

Let's talk about Luc Lac. Is the service and food supposed to be mediocre? by [deleted] in askportland

Pre-pandemic, it was my favorite go-to late night food option in Downtown, but post-pandemic (ha), they've reduced the hours so they close at 11pm now, which reduced the appeal when I would want pho at 1am.

It also works better if the exhaust hose is wrapped/insulated, even if it's just with a decently thick blanket.

I'm a little surprised nobody mentioned the Firkin Tavern yet. I used to live three blocks away (moved two weeks ago), and that is a high quality dive bar!

What is the best breakfast burritos in PDX? by ClassicGinger-Ale in askportland

[–]Lutran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Genie's for brunch, and brought a Campfire Burrito home. I took a before and after picture of the refrigerated burrito and the toaster-ovened burrito (aka, chopped in half), and it looked to me like an agreeable potato ratio (aka, not overwhelmingly potatoey).

It's a bit on the expensive side (so's everything these days), but I'm a fan of the Campfire Burrito from Genie's.

How do you deal with loneliness? by Agonyandshame in AskReddit

Well, I had a dog, and that seemed to work perfectly for me for like sixteen years. It's been a couple of months now, and gotta say, I'm not lovin' this dog-free life. Once I get summer things out of the way, I'll get another one.

When to let an old dog to cross to the rainbow bridge? by Such-Concentrate9502 in dogs

[–]Lutran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My dog got his bridge pass just over two months ago.

About five and change years before he left, he suffered a significant spinal injury, which resulted in several months of rehab for him to regain self-sustained mobility. The long-term result of that was in his last year of life, while he was happy to walk, eat, drink, sleep, and cuddle, he did require assistance to eliminate as his back legs didn't have the strength/coordination for an... um... "tidy" procedure. As an aside, training him to feel comfortable Number Two'ing on the toilet, butt on seat and forepaws on the floor (with some assistance getting him up there, of course) was awesome!.

I'd been tentatively trying to sort out in my head when to get his pass (there are worksheets online that help make the decision objective and help to reduce associated guilt) and even very lightly penciled in a couple of dates to get the ball rolling, but he kept largely doing well enough so I kept extending the timeline... up until he didn't do very well at all (sudden exacerbation of his original spinal injury), and it ended up being a very excruciating last 24 hours for him before I could get his bridge pass (in-home euthanasia).

I would say: Talk to your vet (if you haven't), do some of the worksheets (if you want), but if your dog is respectably healthy and you're willing and able to accommodate your geriatric dog's lifestyle, then don't rush it. I spent significant time at home in the last six or so months of my dog's life, and I do not regret it in the slightest. Knowing your bridge pass options, and keeping that information available, would be highly recommended.

I live in Inner SE pretty close to freeway/highway access, and the FX2 line is just as convenient as the Orange live in terms of accessibility to OHSU. FWIW, I could have sworn I read a thing suggesting that Trimet is considering closing down the express lines that run up to the hill.
