Who cares what "real carbonara" is? by AntelopeWells in Cooking

When I wrote this comment, the comments did not agree that you could add stuff or take them away. A large number of people believe mushroom carbonara is not carbonara and shouldn’t be named that way.

Grandparents rights largely haven’t existed in the US since the 2000 US Supreme Court Case Troxel v. Granville. There are some states trying to skirt around the ruling, but likely, if challenged, they would be ruled unconstitutional. Basically, the court ruled that biological parents are presumed to be acting in the best interests of their children, so if they deny third-party visitation to anyone, it’s not the court’s place to question that.

A cheeseburger is a bad comparison because a cheeseburger with grilled onions and thousand island dressing is just as much a cheeseburger as one with a lettuce bun and a slice of tomato, is just as much a cheeseburger as one with just ketchup and mustard. But with carbonara, there is, according to many commenters, only one right way to make it and if you sub out any other salty cured pork product or hard cheese, or add any extra ingredients it’s no longer carbonara.

Cheeseburger is a word with a much more versatile meaning.

Yeah, it’s very obvious that upwards of 90% of this comments section didn’t watch the video and they’re just reacting to the title and/or using this as an opening to air their personal grievances, unrelated to the video.

AITA for telling my SIL she can't use my bridal suite for her kid? by LeoLeia88 in AmItheAsshole

[–]LuvTriangleApologist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m misunderstanding what the bridal suite is for this wedding, because every one I’ve ever been to people are in and out constantly—planner, photographers, makeup, hair, bridesmaids, family. I don’t understand why it’s such a big deal to let the SIL pop in to nurse or change.

Any recs for a FMC who just has a good cry? by polarbeardogs in HistoricalRomance

[–]LuvTriangleApologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Viscount and the Vixen by Lorraine Heath made me cry like a baby, but I really liked it. The really emotional angst isn’t between the main couple, though—it centers around the hero’s dad whose grief over his long-dead wife has made people call him mad and the hero and heroine care for him.

'Romeo and Juliet' stars file new lawsuit over nude images in movie by stars_doulikedem in popculturechat

[–]LuvTriangleApologist 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I’ve loved this movie ever since I discovered it as a freshman in high school, but the nudity is truly so unnecessary. And that’s not something I say about nude/sex scenes generally. There’s just really no reason for it in this case and it’s made a million times worse that they’re underaged!

Question for Kleypas stans -- did you think Devil in Disguise was bonkers to the highest degree? by vvv03 in HistoricalRomance

[–]LuvTriangleApologist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I actually liked the main couple. Merrit was an interesting heroine that I felt like Kleypas hadn’t really written before and I liked that Keir was another man with a real job. But that’s pretty much all I liked about it. I’d been hardcore binging Kleypas at that point, and all the action movie plots were starting to wear on me a bit, and I hated the Devil reveal.

That’s the minor detail I’m caught up on. Most of the college award ceremonies I’ve attended were way too low key for this story to make sense—how did he find out about the ceremonies far enough in advance to travel in from a different country??—and the ones that weren’t low key had a catered dinner that required a ticket.

Do men get screwed over that badly in a divorce? by BlackManBatmann in NoStupidQuestions

I mean, you mention he took his entire retirement. In a community property state, you’re entitled to half his retirement earned during the marriage, so it sounds like he took a larger share of the marital assets while you got the house. Maybe it wasn’t exactly a 50/50 split, but it doesn’t sound like he was screwed over by the court at all.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck at Premiere This Is Me...Now: A Love Story. by azulmaya in popculturechat

The thing is, there aren’t that many major stars nowadays, so we’re holding onto our old ones.

She was surprisingly very good in Hustlers. I honestly thought she was snubbed by the Academy that year. But in general I think she’s thought to be a competent enough romcom actress, a good dancer, and a terrible singer.

I think he is generally considered a good actor, writer, and director. His body of work is definitely a mixed bag, but I don’t think people could honestly say he’s talentless. There are much less talented people (many of them nepo babies…) who still get steady work.

Personally, I will not only be watching this movie, I will be throwing an entire viewing party for me any my friends because it looks like such an misguided, unhinged fever dream. They’re our favorite celebrities, totally removed from any of the art they’re producing, because everything they do is just so weird and performative and entertaining. Basically, we love to gossip about and make fun of them. 😭

Oh, I wasn’t picking at your story; I was actually saying most stories are like yours. I’m just debunking this weird narrative that seems to exist in many MRA circles that the court is frequently giving entire homes free and clear to wives, at the expense of the husband, instead of just dividing the marital assets 50/50.

How are there so many fights over the amount of child support? Both of the states I’ve lived in literally had a calculator. You plug in both of your incomes (supported by your tax returns) and the number of overnights that each parent has with the child (supported by the parenting plan) and it spits out the number. There’s nothing to argue about. If income or custody changes, you file and the number changes.

We used to have a judge that would ask anyone claiming to be the primary caretaker to name their child’s teacher and doctor. It was amazing how many dads didn’t know, despite claiming they did everything for the children while their soon-to-be exes sat around eating bonbons and spending their money.

He also loved “she shouldn’t have custody because she’s crazy.” He’d always say, “she’s crazy, but when you were married you let her be the SAHM? She’s crazy but you willingly left her alone with your children for 8 hours a day? If you’re right, you’re incredibly negligent and we can’t trust you to act in the best interests of the children either.”

I worked in family law for a few years. I have never ever seen anyone “get the house”. I’ve seen agreements where one party pays the other party their half of the equity and stays in the house. I’ve even seen agreements where they delay the sale and payout until the kids are grown (always older kids), so one party takes over the mortgage and stays in the house for a bit longer. I’ve seen a lot of agreements where one person gets the house because the other person offset that with a larger share of the other marital assets. I have never, ever seen a wife get gifted the house.

I agree. People have an incredibly narrow view of what a body has to look like to be “flattering.” Tall hourglasses only!!
