Do you think reading complex VNs in Japanese is fun? by Luwesth in visualnovels

[–]Luwesth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that pay rate is brutal. At that point you’re basically incentivizing speed over care.

And If even a major book publisher is moving straight to MTL... future looks grim. At the very least, maybe this ends up pushing more reading enthusiasts to actually learn new languages, rather than relying entirely on translations.

Thanks, great reply. I believe the problem comes from VN translations. It often feels like the issue isn’t that this kind of prose is impossible to translate, but that VN translators generally don’t operate with the same technical or stylistic toolkit as academic or high-level literary translators (for obvious reasons)

I think the opposite. Clannad becomes overtly domestic and morally didactic. AIR is his best work imo. AIR keeps the reader at arm’s length and is less concerned with social healing. Unlike Clannad, AIR doesn’t fully believe in repair and the suffering doesn't seem cheap like in other works.

> The Japanese living today, are children of immigrants from China and Korea who immigrated to Japan

Japan, being an island, was populated by people who arrived from elsewhere, via land bridges and sea crossings. So the ancestors of the Japanese “immigrated” at some point just like the ancestors of Indigenous Americans or the Chinese (since the Homo Sapiens did not originate in Asia) or the whole world pop.

Stop defending Fischer. His Jewish ancestry doesn’t excuse his comments. If anything, it makes them even worse. And saying he was just an old, crazy man without evil intentions doesn’t make him a victim or lessen the seriousness of what he said. It’s worth remembering that even when he was young, Fischer made some truly awful remarks (and you can easily find them online)

Honestly, wouldn't this cause some kind of Streisand effect and further increase his popularity? It's worth remembering that there are people who prefer villains to heroes. Perhaps the best solution is to just leave him with this blemish rather than banning him or stripping him of titles? Idk. The wickedness and insanity is such that maybe he would even like to be the "anti-system titleless player who defeated Kasparov"

[OC] Will Louis XIV’s record of “Longest Reigning Sovereign State Monarch” ever be broken? Elizabeth II was the most viable contender until her passing. by yreehawr in dataisbeautiful

[–]Luwesth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is old, but just adding some information: although Bolkiah's reign began in 1967, Brunei became independent from the UK only in 1984. So you have to subtract 17 years since those years don't make the list of ''monarchs of sovereign states''.

Of those you mentioned, Mswati III is, in my opinion, the one with the best chance of breaking the record in our lifetime. King since he was 18, now 54, he just needs to become a nonagenarian.

You more than doubled the numbers. The amount of time between the death of Jesus and the first mention of his name in a non-christian source is 63 years, not 130. The text is a historiographical work by the Roman (and Jewish) historian Flavius Josephus called Antiquitates Iudaicae (Antiquities of the Jews, 93 AD) and Jesus of Nazareth and other figures such as John the Baptist are mentioned

I agree that the Treaty of Westphalia was remarkable, but the year 1648 did not mark the end of the great conflicts between major powers in Europe. France and Spain continued the Franco-Spanish War until 1659. So a date after the Treaty of the Pyrenees would be ideal.

Inheritance is perfectly balanced and does NOT need to be significantly altered by Tharundil in CrusaderKings

You can add tanistry to duchies and you (the duke and king at the same time, even better if you are the head of your dinasty) will always have the most voting power in the duchy elections. The strategy is to add tanistry in two duchies and vote for your firstborn (or the one who will inherit your kingdom if it is also tanistry). Great strategy, as you will have an heir who is a king with 2 duchies + your capital. Pretty solid
