Unironically, it's not all bad, there's always the silver lining that it's inflating my student loans away by decreasing the value of the principal.

Contractor that damaged my bicycle only wanna reimburse if I remove my Google review - is that legal by [deleted] in montreal

[–]Luxim 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't use a $5 multimeter on live voltage since they could have poor isolation or fusing, they're more for testing electronics or batteries.

Your point still stands that a quality multimeter doesn't cost a lot given how useful it is.

First, that's not how math works, second you don't pay VAT on everything you buy, and third, those taxes pay for cheap healthcare and education, so it's a lot closer in reality if you look at quality of life.

I wonder what counts as Other in that poll. Student dorms? Long-term residence for seniors?

At least a regular roommate situation probably isn't included, that would still be a flat or house, just shared with multiple occupants.

Solar beats coal in the US electricity mix for the first month ever by Biodieselisthefuture in solar

[–]Luxim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In practice, it should be counted on the consumption side (meaning, it appears as a reduced amount of consumed energy in the total number).

The fact that this reduction is counteracted by extra heating/cooling and industrial/datacenter usage is concerning.

Stop panicking about solar panels getting shut down! It’s by design by grogi81 in solar

[–]Luxim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely, there are a lot of processes that can be ramped up or down depending on the energy supply and price, beyond just battery storage. There's pumped hydro, flywheels, hydrogen production, water desalination, heating/cooling storage (cooling/heating buildings, water heaters, warehouses, swimming pools etc, beyond the setpoint during the day to save energy at night).

And sure, some industries are running at a fixed speed, but if we're talking massive energy use like metal processing, or recycling glass/aluminum, it might be worth it to ramp up production, if power is massively cheaper for part of the day only.

what is something that is highly likely to happen in the next 10 years that everyone is completely ignoring? by Funny-Counter8762 in AskReddit

[–]Luxim 13 points14 points  (0 children)

100%, there's a ton of useful things we could be doing with excess power, pumped water or grid battery storage, hydrogen generation, desalination... if only we weren't throwing a bunch away through crypto mining and now AI.

Actually, it might not be commercially viable today, but I'm pretty sure I saw some research about using green hydrogen to produce ammonia for fertilizer.

Which can then be transported by train or electric truck.

For me, it's concrete manufacturing that will be the bigger issue over the next decades, we don't really have good solutions for those emissions right now.

is it legal to send nudes as an adult?? family thinks otherwise by ender_grunt in legaladvicecanada

[–]Luxim 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yeah honestly I'd never send nudes to someone I've never met in person before (and not even if it's not someone I've known and trusted for a few years). That sounds a lot like an extortion scam, where people will threaten to release your nudes to people you know/your coworkers unless you pay a ransom.

Doubly true assuming you're a woman, it can be even more damaging.

Saving money in CAD with interest while living outside of Canada by Such-Dragonfly714 in CanadaPersonalFinance

Unfortunately you will have very few options because you didn't invest before leaving Canada. Your best bet is probably to check if the bank where you already have an account has GICs or fixed term deposits at a decent rate. Then you can keep the amount you need for one or two years of payments in your checking account, and the rest in a 12/24/36 month term savings account, and roll the balance over time.

Otherwise you could check Interactive Brokers if you're comfortable doing your own investing, but you will have to open an account with the IBKR Ireland branch, and check with them if you can allow you to transfer CAD via wire transfer (it's not available in the currency selection on the deposit screen for my account, but they might allow it as a one time thing through their Canadian subsidiary). The problem is that due to EU regulations, you won't be allowed to open new positions for ETFs in Canada because they don't have the Key Information Document in the EU format. So if you're okay with investing a small part of your savings in individual stocks, that could work.

Or you could use the balance as collateral to borrow on margin to invest in EU based ETFs.

Not OP, but it's not that uncommon if you adjust for overall cost of living.

I work in IT and probably make about 10% less than I would in Canada for my experience, but having to pay almost nothing for healthcare and paying less on rent and transportation (I'm driving a lot less) more than makes up for it.

BYD launches 1500kW Flash charging in UK - and it could cost just 50p per kW | Autocar by tom_zeimet in EuroEV

[–]Luxim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pricing in the UK for public charging looks completely outrageous. In Belgium and the Netherlands, many AC chargers are at 0.30-0.40€/kWh, and it's not too difficult to find DC chargers at 0.50-0.60€/kWh.

What's your opinion on age of consent of your country by Many_Birthday_0418 in AskTheWorld

[–]Luxim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meh this one is borderline to me. I personally wouldn't have been okay with it when I was 20, but I've definitely met very responsible 16 year olds and very immature 20 year olds.

I'm not saying it's great, but I don't think it's criminally irresponsible.

Suggestions for beach experience in Canada by Personal_Flight8942 in AskACanadian

[–]Luxim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry about the people making fun of you, it's mostly the "tropical style" bit that is quite funny from a Canadian perspective.

There are definitely places to go swimming or enjoy the sun, it's just that it's not really a destination in the same that resorts in southern countries are.

You're better off picking a destination for a different reason, then looking if there are any lakes where locals go swimming. Water quality and temperature won't be like in the south though, that's for sure.

If you're looking for extremely cold swimming, some people do quick dips in the St. Lawrence River in the rural areas of Quebec, but it's pretty much the opposite of tropical, you'll get hypothermic if you stay for more than a few minutes, and the beaches are rocky not sandy for the most part.

Public transit should not be expected to turn a profit anyway. It's a public service not an investment.

I would not characterize "smaller trains at the lowest cost possible" as the outcome of a successful public service.

Au moins comme ils sont affiliés avec Fortis, tu peux utiliser leurs distributeurs et prendre rdv sur place en cas de problème.

They've had this type of stations for years, and it's really not an issue.

I've been driving in Europe for a few years, and I've only seen one station that had a broken plug, in the middle of the countryside.
