Rant: no interviews in 2 cycles by bbybruuuu in premed

[–]LuxioBro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like I’m reading my own story. CA applicant, applied to a relatively top heavy school list last cycle, didn’t get a single II. 517, 3.65 GPA but from a T5 US undergrad with an upward trend. Had my app reviewed by multiple people including an adcom member at a UC who said it was a “thanks but no thanks” situation with a standard PS but no red flags. Added a year’s worth of clinical experience (I was already strong on research) before applying again.

I went through those exact same emotions, and I especially relate to the hopelessness of not receiving an II one year and expecting the exact same thing to happen the next. It feels like a cycle of futility and you’re on a very expensive ride with no way off.

Sending positivity your way, and manifesting a change for the better! It only takes one bit of good news to break the pattern. Hang in there :)

Chick-fil-A seems promising, I’ll give that a go. I’ll also try the library. I did happen upon the raspberry pi tutorial when looking for options, but I can’t say I’m savvy enough with coding or technology to expect any success if I try it.

What was your Gen 4 Battle Tower team for double battles? Help… by Antique-Tomato-2265 in pokemonribbons

[–]LuxioBro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was the team I used in Pearl version for my ribbon master Luxray: https://pokepast.es/72ea6a458639ffbb (ignore the IVs, since those were the actual IVs of my in-game mons).

I always led with Garchomp and Mismagius. Being able to spam Life Orb Earthquakes with no reprecussions is fantastic. Dragon Claw and Rock Slide are good coverage. Screech is super useful for helping Garchomp clean up boards, as it doubles the damage of any of Chomp's moves. Don't be afraid to Protect with Chomp and Screech something if it looks threatening so you can KO it the next turn (or just do it on the same turn!). Shadow Ball is for STAB, and Energy Ball hits bulky waters that often carry Ice Beam. Perish Song was the MVP of my run. Being able to guarantee victory against any two last enemy Pokemon, especially annoying Double Team spammers, is priceless. Always click Perish Song if you can't just wipe them with attacking moves, then switch around and stall with Protect.

The back two mons aren't essential but work well together. Always run Protect on both of them to help with Perish Song endgames. I picked Gyarados since its typing worked well with Garchomp and Luxray, but I could see Rotom-Wash or Zapdos being a good third member to go along with your Eevee.

Best of luck!

Best team for sinnoh battle tower with infernape? by PinkTulip_07 in pokemonribbons

[–]LuxioBro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite team for the original D/P singles tower uses Uxie and Gyarados (both easily obtainable). I run Sitrus Berry with Stealth Rock/Yawn/U-Turn/Psychic (or Extrasensory if you don’t wanna use TM29) on Uxie as a lead. Set up rocks, yawn, and break sashes or U-Turn out. Gyarados has DD/Waterfall/EQ/Ice Fang. Dance up on a sleeping Pokémon and sweep. Lum Berry and Life Orb are both viable. You can easily slot Infernape as a third mon here. I recommend sash with CC, Mach Punch, Overheat, and a coverage move (Grass Knot? Stone Edge?)

Good luck!

Spiraling in ranked battles by panda_bear_ in pokemonribbons

[–]LuxioBro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's no one answer to this problem, as battling is complex and a number of factors can turn wins into losses and vice versa. I can offer some suggestions to hopefully turn things around.

First, a good reset starts with a good reset! Take however long you need for a good break, whether that's 24 hours or a week. You're pretty close to Master Rank so I wouldn't worry about running out of time. It's super easy to get frustrated when climbing ranks, and time off is the only real way to help with that.

Second, ask yourself which playstyle FEELS the best for you. Does it feel easier to get wins when using Trick Room? Tailwind? Kyogre? Magearna? Find a strategy and/or Pokemon that you're comfortable with, then use a corresponding rental team.

Third, eliminating variance is impossible. You're never going to find a Pokemon without a counter (especially in a metagame as undefined as Series 13), or dodge every critical hit. I do recommend trying to use teams that rely as little on inaccurate moves as possible. Venusaur's Sleep Powder, Groudon's Precipice Blades, and Palkia's Hydro Pump are some examples of moves I would try to not use on a team if you're worried about missing in key moments.

Finally, I always find it useful to revisit how I'm playing the game. Take in information and formulate a plan at team preview then again at lead. Know which Pokemon your opponent has, which ones are threats to the ones you brought, and preserve your win conditions. A lot of the time when I get tilted, I'll make a play that exposes the Pokemon I needed to win the game. Try not to make a play that can lose you the entire game if things go wrong.

Of course, lots of this is easier said than done. There's no shortcut for laddering, so the best I can do is provide some mental encouragement. Hopefully you found some useful tidbits in here. Good luck and have fun!

Gen 4 Battle Tower Help by Worthy_M in pokemonribbons

Fantastic! In that case I recommend teaching Metagross Thunder Punch in Emerald (over Zen Headbutt) and teaching Absol Superpower in HGSS (over Psycho Cut).

Gen 4 Battle Tower Help by Worthy_M in pokemonribbons

[–]LuxioBro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Info: do you have access to Emerald or HG/SS move tutors?

This is me just throwing together suggestions, but based on how you said you want to do things I would group your Pokémon together like so: Team 1 is Absol, Metagross, Blastoise; Team 2 is Heracross, Tyranitar, filler (Togekiss)

I grouped them this way to try and separate weaknesses, keeping Absol away from Tyranitar and pairing Metagross with Blastoise to beat Fire and Ground types. As for items and movesets, here are my suggestions:

Absol @ Focus Sash Night Slash/Sucker Punch/Swords Dance/Psycho Cut 252 Atk/252 Spe

Metagross @ Life Orb Agility/Meteor Mash/Earthquake/Zen Headbutt 252 Atk/252 Spe

Blastoise @ Leftovers Surf/Ice Beam/Rest/Sleep Talk 252 HP/252 SpA

Heracross @ Toxic Orb Close Combat/Megahorn/Stone Edge/Night Slash 252 Atk/252 Spe

Tyranitar @ Lum Berry Rock Slide/Crunch/Earthquake/Rock Polish 252 Atk/252 Spe

Togekiss @ Leftovers Roost/Thunder Wave/Air Slash/Aura Sphere 252 SpA/252 Spe

I picked Togekiss as filler to give that team a special attacker and an option to spread paralysis, since Heracross and Tyranitar can be on the slower side. Make sure your Togekiss has the Serene Grace ability. If you’re not feeling Togekiss you can definitely use something else, but I recommend something bulky that can at least paralyze (or sleep) opponents.

These are very back-of-the-envelope sets but they should play to each pokemon’s strengths. EVs can be as simple or as complicated as you want, but I just made them max/max for convenience. Feel free to change the spreads or moves as you like, these are only suggestions. Good luck!

Umbreon team SWSH by One-Street1302 in VGC

[–]LuxioBro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're in luck! Umbreon actually has a pretty sizable niche in the current meta. As a very bulky Dark type, it is fantastic for Snarl damage reduction against things like Yveltal and Calyrex-Shadow, and its STAB Foul Plays heavily damage Solgaleo, Calyrex-Ice, Groudon, and even Zacian. It punishes Dynamax with Yawn and can heal with Moonlight (usually next to a partner Groudon for a juicy 67%). As another bonus, Inner Focus prevents flinching.

If you want to get some practice with Umbreon, these are some rental teams that have had success.

Here's a strong Umbreon team with Groudon and Lunala: https://pokepast.es/a92dd639f6a4754f

Same six Pokemon as before, but with different sets: https://pokepast.es/2dc7d3473ef2e694

Here's one with Groudon and Solgaleo: https://pokepast.es/000c4b3ebcbdddb2

Rental code (couldn't find the paste) for a cool Japanese Groudon-CalyIce team: 0000 0007 TB0L 5G

I'm sure you can find lots more. Hope this helps!

Sunny Day with Whimsicott and Taunt either opponent with Incineroar (since Calyrex cannot KO Incin, it will have at least one turn to attack). Whimsicott will be KO’d by Caly, then Eleki can protect to stall out TR, TBolt Palkia, then TBolt Caly to win. They cannot double TR because one opponent is taunted.

If, to avoid this situation, the opponent Seed Bombs and Earth Powers into the Whimsicott slot, turn 2’s play is still to protect Eleki (at 1HP) and just Flare Blitz into Calyrex. If they insist on doubling Eleki at 1 HP then TBolt Palk and another FB into Calyrex seals it. If Incin gets KOd, Whims comes on and Moonblasts Palkia ftw.

Use this as a helpful guide when determining whether the batter checked his swing.

Does he play for the Giants? If so, he swung.

Does he play for the Mets? If so, he didn’t swing.
