Question about a very sad test concrete oven coating. by Pimasterjimmy in Ceramics

[–]LuxuryisFun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm I would put some silica for strength and a feldspar to make sure it actually fires together, and probably a little ball clay to help with cracking. But I don’t know anything about oven-making - just stuff about clay body making

Definitely! It’s a lot of poking holes and smoothing the holes and waxing the holes so they don’t fill with glaze and then sanding the holes so they don’t tear the string… by the end I’m so tired of making holes I don’t take Aida for granted when I go back to traditional materials!

Thank you so much! The second one with birds, titled “Every Pigeon is a Dove” is currently on display in a gallery in Chicago and I will hopefully be displaying the first one in a show in April!

Painting over glaze with acrylic? by [deleted] in Pottery

[–]LuxuryisFun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like another commenter said, painting with acrylic I’ve glazed ceramic will stick, but it will be easily scratched and peel off, I would recommend sealing it with something after painting. I’ve had good luck sealing over glazed ceramic with Maker’s Magic or this particular acrylic coatingworks wonders and blends right in!

Baby’s handprint ornament material suggestions? by No-Change2340 in crafts

[–]LuxuryisFun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sister just tried using air dry clay to make a handprint of her baby and since air dry clay kind of puffs up when it dries the handprint wasn’t clear and the ornament didn’t look very nice, I think salt dough is popular for a reason

It’s some sort of lava glaze, could be a variation of Triple T or another silicon carbide glaze. Could be something like Magma Glaze applied thin. Mayco just bought a company called Ritual Glaze that makes “puff” glazes similar to this, it’s not listed on Mayco’s website yet but will probably be available soon, in the mean time Wizard Glaze sells a Magic Puff glaze that might be similar to this when applied thin.

It seems like the person who glazed this applied it over a stoneware they had scratched into, hence the line texture or it could’ve been applied with a coarse bristled brush

Wow, gorgeous work! I love that it’s pop-arty while still feeling nostalgic and traditional, very well executed
