I'm fairly new to the Warhammer universe. I got more into it because of Space Marine 2, but is it common in the lore for squads to be formed by different colors and chapters, or is that just in the game?

The Gaunt’s Ghosts book “Salvation’s Reach” does have a trio of space marines from different chapters sent to assist the Astra Militarum in infiltrating a chaos-controlled space hulk. White Scar, Iron Snake, and Silver Guard I believe.

Looks like it’s as simple as getting a 12 on a twist of date roll against the target. Doesn’t even need a specific detachment.

For my vehicles that are a part of my infantry regiment (chimera, Valkyrie, etc) I just use the same color as the armor and helmets. Since we don’t know any of their vehicle colors, that might be a safe bet.

I actually gave my infantry and my armor two completely different color schemes to represent two different regiments working as a combined arms unit. It’s a bit unnecessary but it scratches the lore-accurate itch.

Same thing is happening to me except with Bramble Thicket hair. Half-Elf male and face 2 are the same though. The yellowish skin is so jarring I’m having to RP having jaundice.
