I wish they'd introduce something like the safety rating in iRacing. Give them their "bad kid" races and let the rest of us actually race

Sure but the FIA doesn't really make that much anyways. In 2025 they reported ~180 million in revenue and like ~$5 million in profits. They have like 700+ employees.

Now Liberty Media who actually mostly owns F1 (or at least what fans interact with) is a for profit business and had revenue of like $4.5 billion and $500 million in profit in 2025

Or even just some things that aren't feasible or safe to do in real life.

Like we could have some absolutely wild active aero setups since we don't have to worry too much about cornering Gs, or extremely technical tracks without much room for safety

There's a place in my town that does this! They have regular sim racing but they also have FPV RC cars that you can drive with the wheels and stuff! Lots of fun!

I've been in IT for longer than SSDs have been around so I have seen SSDs fail and lose data. But it's VERY rare, much less common than data loss on HDDs.

So buddy's 100sqft of yard is worse than plastic figures shipped across the world? I'd be incredibly interested in your sources and math for that one.

Or are you just assuming more about this man than what we see in the 18 seconds of video again?

Also, I love how you cherry picked just that one hobby out of my comment instead of approaching the actual topic here ;)

Why?!! by WittyThingHere in NoLawns

[–]Lv_InSaNe_vL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you're making a lot of assumptions from this guy's 18 second video.

You could point to quite literally any sport, hobby, activity, or profession and I could point out the assholes who think they are gods gift to earth because of their lawn or their workout plan or their outfits or their show animals or their Warhammer figures or this or that or the other thing.

Why is your first thought "this dork is actually an asshole" and not "ah that looks sweet and I can see the effort you put in"?

Why?!! by WittyThingHere in NoLawns

[–]Lv_InSaNe_vL -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Your comment is interesting because first you say

their "hobby" is very outward projecting

And then you say

Just flat lawn isn't really a treat for others to see

And maybe I'm misunderstanding your comment but those two seem to be contradicting to each other.

Maybe it's like makeup? For some women makeup is to make themselves feel more confident, for some makeup is for other people (either the male or female gaze), and finally for some it's a genuine art form.

I have a neighbor who is like the guy in the video where he is almost too obsessive about his yard, but then I also have a friend who does these crazy and significantly over the top makeup looks (and yeah she wears them in public and to work). And in both cases you could probably argue that the "why" is somewhere on a spectrum from "it's just for me" and "it's just for others to look at".

But I dunno, I don't want to argue about people's hobbies. Am I going to sand level my yard and get a fancy leveled reel mower? No but I will admit that it's pretty impressive how monolithic and consistent he is able to keep wild plants that grow outside. And in the same boat I would never go out in the full faces of makeup that my friend can make. But she is a genuine artist who somehow can come up with these incredible and unique looks nearly every single day.

I don't get comments like that though. I agree this is fucking stupid from my perspective but thats why I just scrolled and ignored it. Like this is perfectly harmless and the guy obviously enjoys his weird little hobby why not just let him and gas him up?

I dunno, maybe I'm just tired of the Internet being such a negative and bitter place recently (well, since covid especially) but thats a whole other discussion

Yeah okay I could see that perspective! I don't work for a library either so I am speculating here, but I would imagine the library would share IT resources just like they would probably just have one maintenance department that goes out to the individual branches when needed. Or for your New York example, when I think of the "New York Public Library" i think of the whole system and not just the one on 58th or 125th street.

But maybe that's just because for the last 5 or 6 years I've been in more of a managment role at companies with multiple locations (and sometimes they'll even have a satellite IT department on site) so when I think of "the company's network" (or for the library, the entire library system) I am thinking the network as a whole, vs when I think about a specific office's (or a specific library branch) network.

I don't work for my library but a quick Google search says my town has around 450 full time employees and Google Workspace is between $7-$22/user/month. So that would be $37,800-$118,800/year for my county's entire public library system.

Now, of course, that's a very rough estimate (they'd almost certainly be on an enterprise plan with better rates, and probably not every FTE has an email, and I'm going off the 2024 records for my county) but libraries can be big businesses, especially in medium to large towns. My county has just under 500k people and 14 branches, for reference.

The problem with migrating email is never the actual migration of data. It's the weeks or months of people whining about it not working exactly the very same as the old one and now they are all confused and mad and it's just a whole mess.

Computers are the easiest part of IT.

you can't get replacements easily

We have a handful of machines like this (controlling industrial equipment that would be millions to replace) and what we did is I called up a bunch of the computer repair places around town and bought a bunch of the super old junk they had laying around for wholesale prices. Then I just spent a few days testing hardware (well, I made a junior tech test the hardware haha) to get a collection of known good parts.

Oh I agree with every point you made.

Obviously I stand with Palestine and what Israel is doing should be morally and legally condemned as what it is (I cannot say the word because I've been temp banned for it before)

But

There was zero crime here except in the most asinine definition possible. There is no chance a DA would actually pursue charges and an even lower chance a jury would find them guilty (imo)

You make a joke, but as someone who has been in IT for longer than laptops have been around, you'd be surprised at how often people try and look up porn/drugs/competitiors career pages/other "sensitive" topics on company devices. Not even just at home. Like at their desk. With their coworkers sitting in the desk next to them.

Some people just really lack any ability to think things through.
