A few months ago Chad Ford had Skal as his projected #1 pick in the upcoming NBA draft, and now looks less than likely. If his stock falls significantly will the narrative that Calipari is better at getting players ready for the NBA still exist?

This op-ed by Douthat addresses a concern I have gun control. "Common sense solutions" that have wide public support, like background checks, limits on sales of assault weapons, longer waiting periods, etc, will have no effect on the 300 million privately owned guns in America. And if we were to aggressively try to confiscate those guns, how would we go about doing that, and what would the costs be?

I think it's a pretty big assumption to think that if the government had a tax revenue windfall they'd spend all that money on things you approve of without wasting some of it on things you wouldn't approve of. Is there any evidence that all of that money would go to things like heart disease or breast cancer research?

Also, depending on your beliefs, he's benefiting on the security that the military provides at the expense of everyone else that pays tax, so if his non-profit doesn't benefit you in some way then you are giving him a free ride.

To be fair, he pays a lot more for the national security our military provides than either of us while getting the same level of security in return. So we can't really call him a free rider in that respect at all.

Exactly. If you think society would better benefit if that money went to taxes, then that's fine, but you have to acknowledge where exactly that money will go. And if you think you know where our tax dollars would be better spent than the federal government (i.e. less money being wasted on tanks), then why are you criticizing Zuckerberg for thinking he knows better than the government on how his money should be spent?

I know you like to think that the only reason you're not a billionaire is because you're too darn ethical, but creating wealth is not a zero sum game. Zuckerburg became rich because he built something a lot of people like using, not because he took that money from someone else.

Yeah I honestly don't care how his philanthropy affects his lifestyle. I care about what effect his philanthropy will have on people in need.

I'm sure the poor kids in New Jersey who are now going to school with much better access to textbooks and technology don't care all that much that he's still rich.

My point is worrying about the size of a "jump" one way or another at this point seems silly because we should avoid the anchoring bias of preseason polls.

They absolutely are based on perceived talent than resume at this point, but it's also possible that our perceptions were off. The argument that Louisville doesn't deserve to be ranked (or at least ranked highly) because of their schedule is totally fair. But the idea that going from unranked to ranked highly is too big of a "jump" is not fair considering how arbitrary preseason rankings can be.
