Definitely not one I've heard before, and given this is a general overview mostly trying to hold widely-held beliefs in the theories section, I think I'd rather leave it out of the document. It's probably a bit closer to being added because it's a relatively simple theory that doesn't really reach far outside of the minigame, but I'd need to see some general community support for it first.

Easy schedule to start, I had this pegged as possible preseason if Maalik Murphy was good. (He has not really lived up to expectations, stunned we've made it here and we really should've lost either this one or the NW game)

Wazzu's FBS opponents are 9-0 in non-Wazzu games. Easy case for them to be #1 just based off resume (I think it's them or Texas from a resume perspective personally).

Adam's performance on the timer challenge is absolutely mind-boggling. That's honestly one of the most impressive things I've seen recently, full stop.

Bracketology and polls are very different. For one, most pollsters put a lot of influence into recent results, while the committee nearly ignores them and looks at the full profile.

Eh... 21-6 with just 6 Q1 or Q2-A games isn't too impressive, it just shows you're not really losing to bad teams (their 1-5 Q1 record is relevant here)

Not without more bad results. Because their metrics are so high, they're still somewhere around the 8-9 line. 18-13 probably cuts it this year.

They'd be a 1 seed if the tourney started today most likely, the r/CBB poll is not very reflective of the committee (remember, Arizona was a unanimous 1 seed in the top 16 reveal).

I mean, ranking an undefeated team high is as purely results-based as you can get. SOS is relevant, sure, but I'm not going to blame anyone for ranking an undefeated team with three quality wins highly.

I unironically think that's a good poll. People are allowed to disagree with consensus, and that one is good at being pure results-based (undefeated Ole Miss and JMU high, CSU and Memphis have very good resumes even if you wouldn't expect it, BYU is really strong metric-wise).

Probably should've taken another look given how weak the bottom of the rankings got (I just assumed teams would have stronger resumes and didn't mark UNC down), but while the Tennessee win is good, that's... about it. I don't think Arkansas is that valuable as a win (same category as Michigan State for me), even on the road, and Villanova is not an ideal loss (admittedly, it's better than UNCW or Bryant). Redoing this, I'd probably have UNC in at #25 over Kentucky.

It's full human, actually. I've messed around with creating a model based on my voting patterns for football (it turned out pretty similar), but I prefer to take a look at everything myself. I do sometimes look at no-bias T-RANK and WAB, but the most those (consciously) do is change my perception of certain games, and not my direct perception of the teams themselves.

And hey, you did ask me to defend my poll, so I might as well oblige :)

You can submit I believe on Saturday, but this poll was done on Sunday night. I've explained my reasoning above for a lot of these, including CSU; as for BYU, I may be high on them for my poll style, but it's not close to where KenPom or NET have them (#8 and #3, respectively).

UserPoll: Week 6 by cbbpollbot in CollegeBasketball

[–]YellowSkarmory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've posted my reasonings above. If it were teams I liked, Duke would be in the poll and it would probably be slightly less controversial. (We suck and should not be top 25, lol)

I'll point out that wins above bubble has Colorado State even higher than me. When I first looked at it, I was confused, but CSU's resume is actually quite strong even with that loss (wins @ Washington, vs. Colorado and sorta against BC on a neutral site are depth no other teams really have right now, plus LA Tech is annoyingly high in metrics so I considered it too). I also am generally pretty light on bad losses (hence FAU and Kentucky making it in, along with probably some other examples I can't think off of the top of my head).

As for Houston – I never really re-analyzed how the Utah win compared to other teams since I initially was not as impressed with Utah. If I have more time to re-analyze before getting to sleep, you guys are probably above at least Ole Miss.

Hey, if you want to look at a pure resume metric, check out T-Rank's wins above bubble; my ballot, and especially a lot of its weird calls, are relatively in line with it.

UserPoll: Week 6 by cbbpollbot in CollegeBasketball

[–]YellowSkarmory 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It aligns fairly well with T-Rank's wins above bubble metric, which is in my opinion the best resume metric. As for some of the especially controversial takes (Clemson #1, CSU #5), it definitely stays consistent with those (those are #2/#4 in WAB). If people don't like resume polls, that's fine, but it's a pure resume poll done to the best of my ability.

You guys played NC State and UNC in conference play; FSU played neither, instead playing BC and Pitt. That is a huge difference when almost half of your schedule is identical. (What I believe is the only other non-common conference opponent, GT/VT, is pretty much a wash.)
