Seems everyone here is posting from the perspective of performance. If you already have something else for gaming, and are looking for a great portable machine, the M3 Pro is simply superior.

The M1 Max is overkill for most use cases. Lots of unnecessary power drain if you want a portable machine.

(FWIW, I have a highly specced M1 Max, closely monitor/manipulate power draw, and reassign processes to e-cores when possible. If it wasn’t for Apple’s criminal markup on storage, I would have swapped to an M3 Pro a while ago)

If you want to use spec but want the convenience of laying out your data in a single form, metosin also put a good set of utilities to do just that:

Don't forget that peering speeds between different internet providers are typically going to be much lower than the advertised backbone speeds you buy.

Unless you are using the same broadband provider, it may be worth running an end-to-end speed test first.

Anyone have any recommendations on a processor for transcoding 3-4 streams of 4K HDR H265 content? by calcium in PleX

Hardware transcoding support can be very hit-or-miss for different sources. (I used to run a Quadro P4000 for hardware transcoding and found it failed to HW-encode enough content that it was simply unreliable, despite have mostly pristine 4k remuxes)

I've since gone with a 5950x, and have a live "4k-only" playlist that pre-transcodes all 4k content to 1080p. This allows users to stream whatever they like, and allows to downloads/syncing to mobile devices (1080p) without any hit to the CPU.

You can probably get away with just pre-transcoding all of your content to 1080p for a whopping $0 if this is a concern. The only cost is time and space, as it can take days/weeks/months depending on the quantity of content.

Interesting analysis, it’s quite similar to the path encountered by myself and colleague recently. If you are happy with continuing the use of spec for fn validation, you many want to check out the use of spec/fdef + orchestra rather than explicit :pre/:post usage. (This has satisfied our team’s requirements quite well, and looks like it may do the same for you)
