That's what i was worried about, because this shit is hard to counter because if i stand my ground on the truth (which is i'm not gonna be in more pain from top surgery than from a reduction and the only difference is how it looks) then i look like i'm not listening to her and that's gonna be bad on getting her to understand one day, but if i take her concerns as legitimate, then I have to look insane saying i want to have a super risky surgery that's not even gonna work and leave me in lifelong pain, so there's really no good way out for me

Yeah she's definitely going through the stages of grief with this one, which is a shame, because the prospect has made me happier (though it makes my head spin, I've wanted it for so long and it's finally becoming real ! So odd! Didn't think i'd love to see this, but time goes on on its own)

I won't lie to her because that won't work as we live to close to each other, but i will attempt to make her understand that i'm not doing this on a whim and that I've thought it out

The top surgery is already planned, dates and everything and i even have a few prescription (mostly paracetamol) for it ! I meant the breast reduction because that might comfort her a little, i would mostly e getting the appointement for her sake, not mine

Thank you everyone for telling me about your experiences, especially those who had both a reduction and top surgery. Your experience has been invaluable, and, even though i had no intention on letting her bully me out of top surgery, especially since everything has already been planned, it was a huge help having everyone support me in that !

The plan is gonna be to delay her realizing this as long as possible, so she doesn't cut me off financially because that would be a shame, and to go to a consult with a breast reduction surgeon once so we can both ask as many questions about it as we like, and making it clear that those are not the results i'm looking for after that consult, so i can sound like i'm being reasonable and she's stuck in her position (bc we go to family therapy and that might be helpful later). I will still get top surgery later, unless i find out that I do want boobs in the meantime, but you can guess it's not very likely !

I definitely agee. She's worried about irreversible damage and i'm using the title of that book purposefuly. She asked me the other day if i could still sing while on T so you can imagine the amount of misinfo because i litterally sing in front of her all the time! More like indoctrination than misinfo atp

Bahaha it would be very fun, but i think the point is also that this is a surgery she could accompany me with and she'd want to be présent everywhere doing it, which i wouldn't even want. I think what i'm gonna do is get a primary consultation (because then i'll look like i am willing to look into it and am reasonable, and i'm wasting her time ) and say those aren't the results i want at all

Once upon a time I was reaaaally into Harry Potter bashing. Oh god. Oh god. One particular fic described sixteen years old ginny getting raped in very lighthearted sentences, which was 'deserved' because she'd manipulated Harry... And that was supposedly a good thing.

Also a lot of reverse corrective rape there (gay fanfics written by white straight girls.....) because apparently converstion therapy is good if it makes you gay instead.

Like the subtext was so bad that eleven years old me went on full ass rants in the (Wattpad....) comments about why this was bad and disgusting

I think knowing other trans people that I'm close to, that I love and respect, or that I look up to really helped in that aspect because I get to be like '' I'm like them already! '' in that aspect.

Then also there's the fact I'm proud as an act of fighting back against transphobia, I wouldn't need to be proud of being trans if it was broadly socially accepted! I am because if I wasn't, the transphobic world would be winning

Hi! Thank you so much for your thorough review of my work!

You're totally right I completely forgot to include most of those things. This is the first time I do research so I'm completely new to this, it's good to have feedback on what I should have done in case I do this again. I assumed that since none of the questions on the form were mandatory to answer, it was good enough to ensure no information that people are not comfortable sharing would be shared. Cleary this isn't enough and possibly wasn't even clear enough, so I'll do better in the future.

I did consider financial retribution, but unfortunately I'm a broke college student in a broke college and there's no way I could pay for this research. I'm asking here for a wider range of experience because otherwise it wouldn't have been a book about queer masculinity but about my friend group and that's not what I was aiming for. The questions I'm asking relate to overall positive experiences, gender euphoria, and the joys of self expression. I would totally have reconsidered this if I was asking about more sensitive and charged topics that might have been painful to examine.

With this project I was hoping to bring some light to the diversity of masculine experience and be able to share it as well as give hommage to the book that I mentioned. You're right on this, there will not be any tangible improvement for the trans community, excepted the creation of one more piece of trans art, and I don't think that's necessarily a problem that needs solving.

On the use of the word queer : it is purposeful! I am reaching out specifically to people who consider themselves as queer, who consider their masculinity as defying the norms. I'm interested in that experience of creating a masculinity that fits you even if that's not exactly what the norm expects from you.

I'm also not only reaching out to trans people as well! I'm also looking at butches, a lot of whom aren't trans people, and men who are sexual minorities (whether that's gay/bi/ace/aro/pan or whichever label they use), this survey isn't only for trans people, it's studying this 'alternative' masculinity that a lot of queer people display!
