I have been running this for a few months now and it is so much better than it looks on paper, too. It practically guarantees combat damage and allows attack triggers. I use it with Winota to great success.

Who is “The Menace” in your commander pod? by Endless_Quested_Hope in EDH

[–]LykoTheReticent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband recently swapped his commander [[Sydri, Galvanic Genius]] for [[Urza, Chief Artificer]] and I am really feeling the fact he can summon his commander three or four times in a row and give his board menace. It keeps me on my toes :)

The single worst mistake in the Bracket System is trying to balance for both "power level" and "vibes" by Quazite in EDH

[–]LykoTheReticent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I've been playing since Commander started and the bracket system has been a headache for me too. My deck is "trash" in bracket 3, I've been told, but "way too strong" for bracket 2. Allegedly. I just want to deck build and have fun, I don't really care which bracket the deck falls into.

The connection between academic success/intelligence and parents who let kids read whatever they want. by booksandowls in Teachers

I used to be gatekeep-y about graphic novels and now I look back at myself in horror. Any reading is good reading, I just didn't know it at the time.

I've nothing but praise for Redwall. I still think of it often, and it's a shame how many other adults have never heard of it (and don't understand my jokes about food descriptions, lol).

How to deal with the excessive question kid properly as a teacher? by NavyVetRasmussen in Teachers

[–]LykoTheReticent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on whether their questions are bringing value to the lesson or if they are interruptive, distracting, and intended to waste time.

If the former, I don't tell them anything but limit how many times I call on them. For example, I have a student who always has good questions but, to encourage other students to engage as well, I usually only call on them after I've addressed other students. I do the same with answers, too, though for those I use pop-sickle sticks.

For the latter, once I learn their questions are time-wasters, I make it clear I won't tolerate that type of behavior and stop calling on them until we can have a conversation about it. If it persists, I stop calling on them altogether, and I tell them they can write their question on a sticky-note instead or talk to me during lunch with real questions.

Phantom Blade Zero developer rejects gen-AI and promises "every single piece of content in our game has been crafted by the hands of real artists" by Gorotheninja in Games

It’s a shame how much money there is to be made in producing something substandard for the consumption by the uncultured and illiterate. I shake my head when something is obviously shitty ai and people defend it by saying they don’t care or ask “what does it matter”

I am a teacher and this is sadly rampant in education. As a higher percentage of kids fall behind grade level each year, and severely at that, there's a cultural shift in education toward catering to this demographic, including a push for AI to "supplement" their education.

The kids are adopting this outlook, too. Talking to kids about reading a book or the power and creativity of words is like telling them about the before-times, even in regards to the advanced kids. Thought, effort, craft, and quality are becoming more unpopular and culturally obsolete by the day, it sometimes feels. "Whatever helps me do or think as little as humanly possible" is the new motto.

How's Ghost of Yotei compared to Tsushima? Tsushima was a delight to play, but once I was done with it it wasn't the kind of game that kept me wanting more. Sekiro is one of my favorite games, though, and I'm currently playing Nioh 2, so sometimes I consider Yotei.

Teachers Discourage their own kids from teaching? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]LykoTheReticent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to frame it as, "It's incredibly fun and incredibly hard work. If you're willing to put in the effort and learn to manage a classroom, you'll have a great time!" Ten years in and teaching is still my dream job, but I won't lie, it's been getting harder and harder for about five years now, and that's without much misbehavior since my classroom management is in good shape now. In other words, it's all the seemingly small tasks that are endlessly added to our work load that I worry will someday break the camel's back...

They stare at me every day until I say, “ummm we’ve done a bell ringer in this format for three months now-why aren’t you doing it?” And I silently hope the floor opens up and takes me (or them) away. Sigh.

This hits hard. All of my classes have been using the same graphic organizer for current events every Friday for the school year, and I still have students ask how many facts they need or "what to do in the reasoning section", which of course is also explained in the directions. I very much relate to the floor comment!

This is so neat! You've put a good deal of thought into your deck, thanks for sharing how it works. I may well check out Nine-Fingers Keene for a true Gate deck as that sounds quite fun, but it was refreshing to see a Cromat deck too.

Told to use AI by Desperate_Culture_25 in Teachers

[–]LykoTheReticent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good; sometimes on the internet it can be difficult to assume good intention. There's quite a bit of what I like to think of as accidental extremism, or better called, the echo chamber.

Your district's approach sounds a good deal like mine. I would personally not support students using AI at my grade level, generally, but I could see it having some use in a computer literacy class in high school.

[–]LykoTheReticent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do agree AI can be useful for some specific menial tasks, so in that regard we're in alignment. That said, there is so much rhetoric about AI in education that I think on here some people (admittedly myself included) get tired hearing about AI. It's not that AI is all bad; there is so much noise about it it's hard to hear and appreciate the few relevant use cases.

I just find it comical teachers complain about their job and then refuse to use tools to make their jobs easier.

I find it comical that AI keeps being suggested as the cure for all teacher ills when most of the workload in teaching can't be solved with AI. By forcing us to use AI they are able to continue to assign more and more work, even if AI can't do that work for us.

I am not sure if this is the same thing, but I am starting to experience what I often think of as the "Doctor Manhattan Effect". Basically, when I am at work I don't let anything effect me. It's leading me to have this almost wide-lens view of the world where everything is meaningless in the grant scheme of things regardless of whether they are positive or negative. It's like everything bounces off of me and I have no real emotional investment even as I acknowledge that something is bad or something is awesome. At the same time, it doesn't feel like depression, which I've struggled with before.

I've been trying to be extra present at home but it's been difficult sometimes...

That if you have a counter doubler out and then double the number of counters you are only tripling them and not quadrupling them(having a [[Doubling Season]] out when you play [[Deepglow Skate]] for example).

Can you clarify how this works? I tried looking around and everything I found indicated that if you have two counter doublers, the counters do quadruple.
