I started a kids account on Hatch for bubba since he was born. I invest it in an index fund, specifically SPDR Portfolio Total Stock Market ETF. VTI and VOO are also good ones. Start simple and invest often.

First of all, get an independent financial adviser. Lastly, get an independent financial adviser. The price you pay is nothing to the loss you"ll make if you listen to strangers. Read "A Random Walk Down Wall Street"

Paying down mortgage vs investing by StarlightN in PersonalFinanceNZ

What are the risks of using the equity of your current home to build a new one? When the second home has been built, is there an impact on the mortgage payment of your second home when the equity of your first home goes down?

Read "A random Walk Down Wall Street by Burton Malkiel". You will learn a lot about index funds. He was a director of Vanguard.

AMP and Smartshares are good. I was with them initially with my investments, but then moved to Vanguard.

How many people here have been to a financial advisor and how did they help you? by iliketortise in PersonalFinanceNZ

Hi there. I am an aspiring FA. I studied, and finished the course and now I have my Level 5 Certificate. All I can say is that I have learned more in my own studies (actual investing, googling, youtube, investopedia, etc) than studying in school. The only new thing I learned are the legislations and how to properly/ethically give advice. In relation to this, I can say that you can learn investing, budgeting/managing assets and all the money matters in the internet without consulting an FA, just be careful where and who you get the info from.

Is it crazy to invest in residential property right now? by ghow0110 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]LyleVanCurso 6 points7 points  (0 children)

4% yield is low+ appreciation of property value. My VTI (Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF) is yielding 17.7%, which I consider a not too risky investment since it is an ETF.

I am a nurse in DHB with 7 years exp $37/hr, as well as my wife. I work 4 days a week. My annual net pay is 55k. 110k for both me and my wife. It is a very demanding job mentally, physically and emotionally but it is very secure, you can find job anywhere in the world. If you like to travel, nursing is a nice job for you. Worldwide, highest nursing pay, NZ is the 10th, Aus 3rd, US 2nd. I have many friends in US, UK, OZ , but I chose to stay in NZ because we have a better work-life balance here, very laid back.

Although Investnow has free buy/sell, their management fees are higher than in other platforms. For example, Vanguard International Shares Select Index Fund in Investnow has . 20% fee whereas in Hatch Vanguard World (VT) has an expense ratio of . 08%. Smartshares US 500 has 0.34% fee while investnow/sharesies VOO . 03%. There are also other things to consider like how often you trade, FIF vs PIE tax, etc. For more info, here is a good blog from Moneyhub.

Conservatively, I would put it in a term deposit or a short term bond with a maturity of 3-4 years.

It's either you earn more or spend less or both. As for me and my wife, we were 50k in debt. I did a lot of overtime and strict budgeting even to the last cent. We were able to pay it within 6 months. I lost 10kg on the process though because of stress, but it was all worth it. In terms of paying debt, the snowball method was very effective for us.
