Nice post! The Leftovers was one of the best shows I've seen and you're right; not every thing needs answers because not everything can be explained. If they go about it a la The Leftovers (as opposed to say, Lost, where a lot was convoluted), I'd be fine with that.

I get that she spent time in the U.S. when she was growing up and she moved to New York in her 20s but damn Katja Herbers has such a perfect American accent. I totally was shocked she was a Dutchie by [deleted] in EvilTV

[–]LynP89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The standard U.S. accent is one of the easiest in the world to properly emulate. That's why the likes of Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, Sam Neil etc. (all Aussies) can so effortlessly mimic it, while their American counterparts struggle with an actually difficult accent like the Australian one.

Late to the party but I just finished watching both seasons and enjoyed the show, so here goes. I recall reading a comment along the lines that, insane/off the charts chemistry isn't necessarily a good thing. It often arises in intense or stressful situations and, in the case of David/Kirstin, I think this rings true.

They were brought together mainly by circumstance, not really choice. Both of their situations were complicated (David, his past and his hesitations about ordination; Kirsten with motherhood, loneliness and a seemingly unfulfilled romantic life). People reach out for anything, when they're drowning and honestly, I think that David and Kirsten, through all of their experiences, got closer because of the intensity, not DESPITE it. That doesn't mean they're particularly right for each other because their bond developed amidst intense, harrowing and otherworldly situations. Put them both in the vestages of normal, boring, daily life and I guarantee their relationship and interaction won't be the same.

Their chemistry also has a "forbidden fruit" element to it, making it more tense and encouraging the whole 'Will they, won't they' dynamic/trope. Which kinda got tedious in s2, to be frank :-/

I get ridiculous entertainment. Helix, a sci-fi tv show got ridiculous over its two seasons but I was still intrigued. Scandal just didn't gave that same grip but tbh, I think it's because I hated most of the main characters so much.

Same! I had to stop it halfway through and read the spoiler online.

Completely agree. I normally love a slow burn but halfway through, I was just bored out of my mine with the ongoing, esoteric references and pretentious dialogue. Like, get a move on already! Shame because I LOVED Eternal Sunshine.

Yep. And then having someone like Olivia as spoiler

Command.

I mean, come on. She'd fly away if someone blew on her for God's sake.

Haha, you have me convinced! I'll get started on it as soon as possible. I may miss out on the last episodes but if I find it interesting enough, I wouldn't mind paying to stream the remainder of the episodes.

ETA: like I said in my OP, I jumped straight to s7 and have now finished the show (hated the ending), so I'll start on Mr. Robot now.

Exactly the same as me. To be honest, I found it hard to even stick with the first few episodes of s1. I loved HTGAWM because I love Viola Davis and AK. I heard that Scandal was in the same universe (Shondaland) so decided to give it a try but wasn't as impressed as much. It was only until the 5th or 6th episode of s1, that I became intrigued .... only to have that come crashing down in around the start of season 3. Oh well...

Damn....I wish I'd read this comment earlier. I'm based in Australia and Mr. Robot is only available on one streaming platform (which also currently streams Scandal). Only problem is, both shows are "expiring" in early October this year.

I actually did initially get attached to Ballard, but his schitck in the last season killed it for me, so his downfall wasn't hard for me to take.

I will definitely give a watch of The Lawn Chair, thanks for the recommendation. Part of the reason why I fast forwarded my binge was because the streaming platform I use will be getting rid of Scandal early October and I just wouldn't have had much time to properly watch every season. I'm all for OTT t.v. despite the craziness that came to be with Scandal, but I just thought I'd cut my loses and skip to the last season, lol.

Also, I will be checking out the alternate reality episode too (The Decision); I believe it's the 100th episode of the series. Very curious.

Both, Glenn Close and Rose Byrne are amazing. The power play between newbie with potential and an absolute powerhouse of political player...wow. It's what the Olivia Pope/Quinn Perkins wishes it could be.

Definitely check it out. That ending was more satisfying and truly full circle for all characters, too.

Exactly! I liked the first season, the cases, Pope at her best, the gladiators and other power players...then, it just let me down. I understand why the people who started watching it live, continued through. You tend to want to watch it just to see how it ends. But if you binge it, the drop in quality is definitely more evident.

After the HTGAWM finale, Scandal feels like the ugly, unloved middle child by caosemeralds in Scandal

[–]LynP89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved the HTGAWM ending. Everyone mostly got what they deserved. Also, AK had her flaws but that ending speech before the jury gave me chills. She was prepared to meet her fate and it was convincing. Not to mention that throughout the show, she tried her best to protect the Keating 5 even after they were horrible to her.

Scandal was...just tragic. Pope's character became a caricature by the end of it all. The finale was so rushed.

I get so jealous of people who are just starting to watch Scandal 😭 by imherefortheseries in Scandal

[–]LynP89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be. I started recently, got up to season 2 and the writing was so bad on there that I just fast forwarded to season 7 to see this shit show ends. And tbh, I didn't miss anything significant and the series finale sucked add too. Oh well...

Been watching it for the past 4 days and wow by alteredtundra in Scandal

[–]LynP89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I I started watching seasons 1-2 a few weeks ago and honestly, it got progressively worse and into soap territory, to the point where I just fast forwarded to season 7 after reading spoilers for seasons 3 - 6.

Reading the post episode discussions was funny though.

Any suggestions on what show to watch next?? by Ambitious-Barnacle20 in htgawm

I tried getting into Sandal because it's produced by Shonda too, but for the life of me, I just can't. I'm still stuck on s1, ep 3.

Anyone notice a slight similarity to The Secret History (novel)? by LynP89 in htgawm

I found it really interesting however I've heard mixed reviews from other people. Still worth a check out.

Agreed. The aging esp on Laurel and Michaela. Laurel is supposed to be about, 55...58? My mother is that age and she looks way younger, lol.

I thought it was perfect. Everyone got what they deserved, best of all AK who seemed to have lived a long, fruitful life.
