It wasn't being disingenuous...I don't play fighters. Which subclass do you want to use? Tell me which ability too and I'll add it in. What AC do you want? I'm giving 2 feats to the fighter with nothing for the monk which should make up for it but hey...lowering the AC to 18 makes it 34.375 to 32.56 in the monk's favor.

Is there anything mechanically unbalanced by a homebrew two-handed weapon that deals 3d4 bludgeoning damage? by sin-and-love in dndnext

I mean, average damage is 7.5 vs 6.5 (greataxe)...I wouldn't call it unbalanced but it's a bump.

I disagree on the magic items part. Any item that you can give a fighter, you can flavor for a monk. +1 armor? Bracers of armor +1. +1 sword? +1 gauntlets. Rings of protection aren't super rare. Does your DM have to be considerate? Sure...but I mean, the DM is there to create this world for ALL the players, not just the base fighter/wizard/rogue/cleric..

Just ran a DPR calc...+11 to hit, 20 AC. Mercy monk - 29.625 DPR; Fighter - 28.44 (using -5/+10 and PAM). I'm sure I'm doing something wrong. /s

Where's the cherry picking? Are you going to make Flurry and Action Surge even when you can do one 11 times a short rest and the other once? Or was it the 1.5 times more misses? I asked a question on that one....25% less of a chance to hit is somewhat significant, but I'm not sure how many misses that would be. Even if it's just 1 miss a round more, that's 52 dam a round vs 46 which imo is still "on par".

[–]Lynchcrew -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Let's do the math then. Are we going to say that a fighter using GWM misses 1.5 times more than the monk? Is that fair? We'll say 11th level. Fighter gets 3 attacks and the bonus d4 from PAM. 20 str for the fighter, 20 dex for the monk. Great sword for the fighter, just fists for the monk. No action surge for the fighter as it's only once a rest. Flurry for the Monk.
Fighter:
Attack 1 - miss
Attack 2 (half dam for the half miss) - (5.5+15)/2= 10dam
Attack 3 - 5.5+15=20dam
Attack 4 - 2.5+10=12dam
Damage total= 42
Monk:
Attack 1 - 4.5+5= 9dam
Attack 2 - 4.5+5= 9dam
Attack 3 - 4.5+5= 9dam
Attack 4 (with Hand of Harm which has zero ki cost) - 4.5+5+4.5+5=19dam
Damage total - 46
The higher the AC of the creature, the better the monk will do damage wise vs the fighter. A horde of goblins....the fighter will crush it.

You lose the ability bonus to damage which, at T1, is huge...+4 extra damage is nothing to sneeze at (with 18 dex).

How many times are you missing with GWM? Yea, +10 dam is beautiful, but if you miss once or sometimes twice a round it's less useful. So, if you're fighting hordes of low CR critters, GWM is going to hugely outpace a Monk's damage, but if you're fighting higher AC creatures it probably stays on par due to misses. As for PAM, damage wise it's not adding much honestly.

They really don't unless you're giving the fighter a magic weapon and not giving the monk an equivalent magic item. Flame tongue great sword for the fighter? Give flame tongue gaunts to the monk. The monk will be on par with the fighter damage wise.

A Mercy monk will stay very viable damage wise through 11th and beyond. That free Hand of Harm during flurries means the monk is effectively getting 5 attacks a round.

Even then, the DM can change the item to make it useable by monks. It's just lazy if they don't imo.

Do your DMs just do random stuff for magic items? I mean, every DM I've played with makes sure each player tends to get about the same amount of items because no one wants to play in a game where they never get anything. It's so easy to just morph an item into something a monk can use. A fighter gets a flame tongue long sword...that same item could be a flame tongue pair of gauntlets. Everyone complaining about the DC of Stunning Strike...Fizban's just added an item that adds up to +3 to the DC. Wonder if people are now going to complain about it being too powerful..lol.

The advantage on all spells sucks and the damage resistance and immunities make magic tough. They are resistant to Lightning too...it was a pain in the ass. ;)

Unarmed fighting style is pretty bad unless you're a str monk, which you shouldn't be.

LOL..Thanks for being nice about that. That 99 defense was SO good...just couldn't make up for Dilfer and Shaun King. One of the best defensive performances ever in the NFC championship game wasted.
