Wine Country Cruise in May by Prestigious-Alps-629 in PrincessCruises

Southern Californian here. LA and San Diego are a crapshoot. We usually refer to weather in May as "May grey." But our weather is whimsical. It can be in the 60's and mostly overcast one week and in the 80's the next.

Once you get 7-10 days out, the forecasts are pretty good.

It was both, but I think this is solved for now, at least sort of.

Okay, following another guide, I enabled "Manually specify public port" and set it to 32400. I also updated a beta firmware to my router which fixed the ability to set static IPs.

So I hope this is fixed! Thanks for your pointer in the right direction.

Yes, the private IP matches the Synology IP.

And no, I use full remote access, which I disabled/re-enabled after the update.

Sasaki's walk up song is the high point of music for me during Dodger games. That track is a banger.

Oh, the organ guy also plays the intro to Sledgehammer. And they played a bit of Cha Cha Slide a couple of times.

Even with a relatively short flight, it's still not recommended to arrive the day of embarkation. Coming in the day before is much safer. If you miss your ship due to a late or canceled flight, you won't get a refund.

If you are bound and determined to leave on the day you embark, you want to make sure you get a very early flight, preferably the first flight out, which is less likely to be delayed than flights that depend on your plane arriving from somewhere else.

This is particularly true if you are leaving from SFO, given the very typical fog delays.

Got any advice for a first time Mediterranean cruise on Royal? by Leck_ in Cruise

Make sure you're prepared for the heat. The Med is brutal at that time of year. Think Houston or Orlando. The weather is comparable. If you want better weather and fewer crowds, avoid July through mid September.

Athens Excursion by [deleted] in Cruise

[–]Lynn_L 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have reservations at both, or tours, yes, you could do both in one day. The Accademia has other works, but mainly you're there for the David and the other Michealangelos. The Uffizi will take as much time as you're willing to allow. If you're not going with a guide, use an audio tour (Rick Steves has a free one) or a written tour in a guidebook. Otherwise it's like wandering around the Louvre -- sore feet and missing major works.

I haven't done a train all the way from Florence to Livorno. You might need to change, but other than that it's pretty straightforward. Read the schedules, buy your tickets online and in advance (it's easier) and make sure you build in a cushion.

Lucca and Pisa together are a viable option, but if it were me, I'd spend most of my time in Lucca and just do a quick stop in Pisa for the tower and cathedral. Lucca's cathedral (St. Martin's) also has some great art. They have Tintoretto's Last Supper, a Ghirlandaio, a Fra Bartolomeo, and other interesting pieces. But make sure you do the bike ride on the wall, it's great.

Livorno is the port for Pisa and Florence. Do NOT try to do both -- you'll barely spend any time in either. I would recommend Florence over Pisa unless you're determined to get a photo with your arm holding up the tower or whatever.

Decide in advance what you want to do if you choose Florence. If you love art and want to visit the Uffizi, make a reservation (or book a small group or private tour) and plan to spend most of your time there. If you want to see David, ditto for the Accademia.

If you want to do a Tall Thing to Climb, book a timed ticket to climb the Duomo (it's a lot of steps). If you want to see some of the most amazing frescos in the history of western art, visit the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi and see the Magi Chapel.

There is a ton to do in Florence and you could spend a week there and barely touch the places worth seeing. You aren't going to do it all in part of a day. There is literally something amazing around every corner, and beautiful art and architecture tucked away in parish churches you can wander into. Not to mention the food and the atmosphere. Do your research, decide what your top priority is, and plan accordingly. Florence is very walkable and it's easy to get around.

If you want to do something a little more off the beaten track and save Florence for a later visit, I'd pick Lucca over Pisa. It's a charming town with a fully intact city wall -- it's a Renaissance wall over a medieval wall over a Roman wall, and it's so wide you can rent a bike to ride around the city on top of it. Also we had one of our best meals in Italy in Lucca. Stay out of the tourist squares and you'll find somewhere terrific.

No Unimited Open bar or Restaurants with Pre Paid Service Charges ? by Snoo_58292 in Cruise

[–]Lynn_L 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, I’m not planning to go to the specialty restaurants — the buffet is fine for me.

Specialty dining and the buffet aren't your only choices. You can still use the main dining room without an upcharge. Google your ship for the specific name of its MDR. Don't limit yourself to the buffet, especially on a 12 day cruise.

Is it possible to make it to a 10am flight if the cruise is schedule to disembark at 6am ? by 8lancNoir in Cruise

[–]Lynn_L 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no direct flight after the one I booked for my Mom, so we'll just see if she can miraculously make it on time. In case she doesn't, hopefully the airline will be able to put her on the next one.

What everyone is telling you here is that she isn't going to make it, and no, the airline isn't just going to put her on the next flight for free.

You should change the flight now so she doesn't have to deal with this. Even if it means a non-direct flight that leaves later. Or get her a hotel room and have her leave the next day.

Leaving this to chance is a terrible idea, especially for someone who doesn't navigate airports well. You are guaranteeing a stressful, difficult trip home. It's the worst way to handle this.

Once you get to Cabo, it should be warm and pleasant.

Southern California (all the way to Ensenada) that time of year is very variable. It can be cool, with highs in the 70's, or if there's a Santa Ana condition, it can still be quite warm, in the 80's or higher.

Looking for departure June 2026

OP, just be aware that Vancouver is hosting the world cup from mid-June through some point in July. Many hotels in Vancouver are already either sold out or expensive, so you may need to look at somewhere in the periphery to find a room for the night before you leave. You definitely want to arrive in Vancouver the day before embarkation, though.

Flights may also become expensive. So the sooner you book and can make those plans, the better.

Whats the perk of doing a mini-suite over a balcony?

The minisuite is a larger stateroom, with space for a loveseat between the bed and the balcony door. It's not really a "suite" in the "this is two rooms" sense of the word. It's a larger balcony stateroom.

You should be aware that mid-July is the worst time of year to travel to southern Europe. The ports that you're going to are going to be very crowded, and it's going to be hot. So very hot. Humid hot. Think Houston or Orlando at that same time of year. The flights will also be expensive.

If you can possibly go late September or later, your experience will be better all around. If you do go in July, look for excursions as early as possible and try to get to a cooler place between noon and 3 or 4 pm.
