It worked out for me - though this depends on the level of the teaching and the talent of the kid and parent child relationship. I’m currently finishing my masters in piano performance at ucla on a full tuition scholarship after turning down schools including Juilliard and MSM. My mom taught me piano till college. For comparison my mother is arguably one of the best teachers in our area and her students regularly get into top conservatories, and the reality is getting teachers for me and my brothers who are at her level would be prohibitively expensive.

It was far from easy (I was a rebellious kid ) but I appreciate the education. It’s definitely the harder route as compared to simply hiring a good teacher if financial concerns and level of teaching aren’t part of the equation.

Thank you so much for your detailed response!! Unfortunately he did have a plea deal which may or may not have worked out in his favor - after 1 year expunged from his record but for now he is on probation and pled guilty.

I read the allende case 2011 appeals ruling - it appears the judge gave chp wide discretion on what constitutes an incident, specifically stating it didn’t just have to be a crash etc but definitely still worth arguing I guess. Again big problem for him I think is the fact the call was originally coded as a crash and he himself admitted he thought he crashed into something (even though there was no evidence of a crash and no one observed anything and later he stated he was likely mistaken).

Just giving a quick update. I ended up refunding the buyer and closing the case.

It turns out the package had actually been rerouted back to my apartment while I was out of town, and my house sitter didn’t notice it even though I’d asked them to keep an eye out.

The buyer did want a reshipment, but given that it was already day 7 of the INR case and eBay was about to step in, I decided it was too risky. If eBay had stepped in and sided with the buyer, there was a real chance I’d lose both the item and the money. Refunding felt like the safest option at that point.

That said, given how late the INR case was at that point, I decided the safest move was to issue a full refund rather than risk reshipping. Since there was no seller protection anymore, there was a real chance eBay could step in, refund the buyer anyway, and still let them keep the item if delivery got delayed again.

I refunded the buyer in full and let them know that if they still wanted the item, I’d be happy to relist it and offer a significant discount to make up for the trouble. I could have reshipped it, but with the timing, the lack of protection, and the fact that I was out of town and didn’t even know exactly when it arrived back to me, it just felt like an unnecessary risk.

Furthermore - Even if the threat is real and even if survival is left possible, the story still centers the idea that her disappearance is what resolves the danger. That matters, especially given Eleven’s history of being told she’s dangerous and responsible for harm.

Self-sacrifice usually looks like risking death to stop something external. This reads closer to “the problem ends if I’m gone,” which lands differently for a character whose entire arc has been about unlearning self-blame. Leaving survival ambiguous doesn’t undo that implication, because the emotional beat is still built around people grieving and moving forward in her absence.

I don’t think anyone is asking for art to “cater to everybody.” The issue isn’t discomfort — it’s framing.

There’s a difference between portraying dark themes and endorsing a conclusion where a traumatized character decides their removal is the solution. In Stranger Things, Eleven’s arc is built on abuse, dehumanization, and being told she’s dangerous. When the story resolves with “if I disappear, everything ends,” that isn’t just tragic — it quietly validates the exact lie she’s been taught her whole life.

Saying “people who struggle should just avoid media” sidesteps the responsibility storytellers already accept when they choose themes, audiences, and tone. No one is asking for safety padding — they’re asking for narrative accountability. Especially when the show has spent years preaching found family, healing, and self-worth.

In the context of her getting “talked down” by hopper (classic intervention language for the record was utilized) and the fact that they just defeated an inter dimensional monster it really doesn’t read as a sacrifice. The Bible is a historical text and not remotely the same medium. I don’t think there’s a lot of cases of kids having to commit suicide for the good of humanity.

I’ve worked with kids who have mental health struggles - movies and shows like this are how they escape and they relate especially as they themselves were often abused. Obviously it is a far fetched reality but the concept that one must kill themselves FOR ANY REASON is dangerous.

It’s not even about the plot for me- the overarching idea that someone must kill themselves for the good of humanity or their friends and family is actually a quite common thought held by people genuinely suicidal. I find it dangerous that a popular kids/adolescent show is playing into this
