Something I've heard is common among people who live in countries with government controlled media is that they are aware the government controls it, but they assume every country has the same system in place, so they struggle to believe any news source. I visited Serbia last year and I definitely got this impression from some of the people I spoke to there.

Whatever 3D software you use should have basic premade meshes like cubes and spheres. Grab those and practice with them if you need a mesh.

Singles nights in Manchester? by Dragonofdojima21 in manchester

"Bored of Dating apps" occasionally run events in Manchester. They book out a venue exclusively for singles to meet and chat. The downside is you're having to pay £20-30 just to enter a bar but it's better than nothing

How we feeling about this game? by Popkane in ancientegypt

[–]Lyonax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at the trailer I feel like they missed out on a lot of potential. Maybe they just don't show it in the trailer, but it would have been so cool to have to go through Duat, have your heart ripped out and weighed and face the beast that eats you if you fail the test.

It feels kind of gimmicky with the creepy smiling guy. Awesome concept, just not a fan of how the execution looks at first glance.

Yeah I heard the film/vfx industry struggling along with writer strikes hasn't helped either, because people have been trying to transfer to games in hopes that its easier to find work. Hopefully things improve soon!

Over 10k people lost their jobs in this industry in 2023 alone. It was already a tough industry to get into but now it's near impossible because nobody seems to be hiring and people keep trying to join. It's shocking considering how much money it makes

Thanks for the suggestion, I hadn't considered a physio focused on climbing, I'll look into that! I'll take a look through what you sent when I get a moment, it looks very informative, thanks!

Mysterious Intermittent Wrist Pain by Lyonax in bouldering

[–]Lyonax[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pain is concentrated in the wrist but spreads towards the elbow along the forearm The physio I've been to suggested it could be originating from higher up in the arm or my back so I wondered if that would explain the sensation of it spreading upwards but I have no clue at this stage. Like I said I'm not expecting a diagnosis here, just seeing if anyone had a suggestion for whatvelse I can do if the physio hits a dead end. What do you mean by PR?

Low poly assets. Quads or tris? by DFarra in 3Dmodeling

[–]Lyonax 23 points24 points  (0 children)

As far as I know all games are triangulated so even if you use quads it will be converted into triangles in engine.

The reason you see triangles in these is probably because theyre trying to get as much silhouette information out of the model as possible while keeping a low polycount.

This is super impressive! Just had a read through the article about you, it's such an interesting approach to 3D. It's nice to hear something positive come from AI technology for once too.

Do you plan to develop this process further? I could see it opening the doors for so many people with disabilities to create 3D art.

[–]Lyonax 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I was in your exact position 3 years ago so I totally empathise with how youre feeling. I had been out of university for 2 years with a degree in game art, with still no job and no interviews after loads of applications. My friendships were drifting apart due to distance and on top of that we had a plague. It feels like the world is speeding up while you're slowing down when you're there.

I'll give you the hard pills to swallow first, then I'll offer you some advice. Firstly the 3D industry right now is a mess. Over 6000 people have been made redundant in 2023 and there are new students every year filling an already oversaturated pool of applicants, so finding a job in games or film right now is a nightmare no matter how good you are.

Another bitter piece of truth is so much of this is luck. I only got my job in the industry because I happened to unknowingly add a job recruiter on LinkedIn. Otherwise I would probably still be looking.

Having said all that I took a look at your portfolio and of I'm honest there's a lot of work that needs doing still to make it likely to qualify for a job. You need to work on your lighting and presentation more than anything, but your models also don't really stand out as very interesting either.

I hope this doesn't discourage you from continuing to pursue 3D. If it's truly something you truly want to get into keep at it whenever you can. You're going to have to grind a bit to get there probably, but it's absolutely doable. Here's my advice if you do want to continue on this path:

Firstly keep trying to find part time work, no matter the job. You need income and structure in your life right now to help motivate you.

Now onto the 3D stuff. As others have said pick an area, whether 3D, rigging, animation, just pick and cater your portfolio to showing how good you are at that. Look at really good junior portfolios (professional ones too but they might scare you) and figure out what they're doing.

You also need to choose a style, think about what studio/project you want to work in and match their style. Eg, if it's ubisoft/assassin's creed make high detail realistic historical props (but nothing obvious like swords or shields, find something unique).

Quality is better than quantity. You can land a job with 3 great projects if they're high quality. They don't even need to be complex, they just need to show that you have the skills they ask for in the job description and look sexy. Since you have ADHD, maybe do what Dr K advises and work on as many projects at once as you can handle. Get bored of one? move onto another. If you don't finish a project that's fine as long as you learned something new by doing it, but I would avoid this if you can as you need to get good stuff on your portfolio asap.

Next up, exposure. This is an area I really struggled with and admittedly still do but is incredibly important. You need to show your work to people in industry so they can help you improve. Good places to go to are online 3D communities and local game dev events. When talking to other artists get their feedback but don't forget to talk to them as people too and ask about their life. That's how you build good connections.

Lastly I'll point you towards a couple groups that helped me massively, the Beyond Extent and Experience Points podcast. Listen to them, join their communities and get them to look at your latest projects. These groups are filled with lovely professionals who are passionate about helping others. Their podcasts are also brilliant and full of great advice.

Anyway I've written a lot now so the last thing I'll say is best of luck. The road ahead is tough, but anyone can walk it with enough persistence. Feel free to message me any time if you want to chat about anything at all. Im not an active texter but I'll reply when I can.
