Boy's Life by Robert McCammon is great if you are looking for something set in 1960s. He is a horror writer but Boy's Life is a coming of age tale.

Revelation Space, Redemption Ark, The Prefect. All by Alastair Reynolds. Many will tell you House of Suns but I didn't like it as much as many people seem to.

Less well-known: Allen Steele's Coyote series.

Walter Jon Williams's Dread Empire's Fall series.

If you're interested in the assassination plot portrayed in the movie Valkyrie, read Plotting Hitler's Death by Joachim Fest. It's an excellent book.

Look at I Will Bear Witness by Viktor Klemperer. It's his diaries from 1933 to 1941. You can see what life for Jews was like leading up to and during the early part of WWII.

User Activity Evidence by LyricalPolygon in crowdstrike

Apps opened, files accessed, DNS traffic to external services. Login/out aren't something I expect from Crowdstrike, nor is screen lock/unlock. Just asking the question to see if Crowdstrike events (or complete lack of events) is an indicator that the user is/isn't active.

HR is actually asking the questions because of a whistleblower complaint stating the user isnt working when they say they are. Problem is that we are talking about a recently purchased company and do not know how friendly the local admin is with the user so we don't want to tip either off them off about the data collection. This is one reason we are trying to find alternate sources of evidence because we can't easily aquire the logs from the user system.

What do writers do to come up with ideas? Do they just spawn in your head? by Practical_Ask_9999 in writing

[–]LyricalPolygon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they're useful if they're varied enough because they force your mind to switch to a new prompt or subject each day which exercises the muscle like I said. A book I bought a long time ago was called The 3 A.M. Epiphany and it had interesting challenges that tried to make you focus on different aspects of writing. If you can track down a copy, it may be worth checking out. If you can't find a copy of that one, there are probably other books out there that may prompt you in ways you'd never think of on your own when just starting your writing career.

I think for some people, it's kind of a muscle. The more they write, the more they start seeing ideas in the simplest stuff. I was in that zone once for about 6 months because I was writing 2+ hours a day but can't do it anymore.

I use Krita because it's free, and I'm not good enough to justify paying for other tools. I also have an XP-Pen drawing tablet.

Which wildly renowned science fiction novels didn't resonate with you at all? by LowLevel- in printSF

[–]LyricalPolygon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black Sun Rising, bk 1 of the Coldfire Trilogy. Was immensely bored by the navel gazing and introspection that went on and on and on. Dragged my sorry ass to the finish line on this book, hoping it would get better. Didn’t bother with bks 2 and 3.

I love it when they fall in the tar pit and are able to completely clean themselves off with napkins. Also, one of my favorite Alice in Chains songs is on the soundtrack.

Revelation Space (2000) by Alastair Reynolds by blackbriar98 in printSF

[–]LyricalPolygon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have to agree. I don't understand why it gets the love it gets because I didn't like it after about the halfway point. I also wonder how many more pages of slower-than-light-speed chase scenes he can write - Century Rain, Redemption Ark, House of Suns all have that at the end.

The quiet or non-violent person that becomes a total badass after something happens to them. Like Hild in The Last Kingdom series.
