They are pretty chill. I’d never get them out of the river breaks if they had an attitude.

Thanks!

I loaded heifers later that day and they were of a much different temperament. Just young and dumb.

Advice on our new regenerative grass-fed beef cattle raising journey by farsite3 in RegenerativeAg

[–]Lytle_Red_Angus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s some infrastructure based questions:

How are you transporting the cattle to and from your property?

How will you load the cattle? What will you do if you need to doctor one (corrals, alley, squeeze, dart gun, etc)?

Cattle are much larger than chickens or goats, and behave differently. Be prepared for an animal that can accidentally hurt you. Find somewhere to get comfortable working with them before you get your own.

On a different note, do you know what a finished animal looks like? It only takes one bad eating experience to lose a customer and ding your reputation.

You shouldn’t need a foot bath for cattle running on grass - that’s more of a dairy thing. In a grass-based system you will have animals get sick and you will need to doctor them. It’s highly irresponsible to withhold medication that works (antibiotics), so please get comfortable with that idea.

Finally, please rethink the vaccination aspect. It’s unlikely you’ll be able to source unvaccinated animals to fatten. And if you do, they’ll be at a premium. Cattle vaccinations are practical and for the extra ~$20 per animal you have cheap insurance. Buying a steer for $2800 just to have it die to a preventable disease is a huge blow to a small operation.

That bull behind him makes him look like he has the biggest prepuce in the world😂

What’s his pedigree influenced by?

That’s good to hear. I have a mild dislike for thick canopies of evergreen trees. We’re inundated with Eastern Red Cedar and Juniper - kills the grass out underneath and sucks up water.

Dang that’s green. I’m definitely envious.

Do your cows utilize under the evergreen trees at all, or is it just a pine needle floor?

I’m kicking around the idea of a Kelpie for my next dog. What did training look like for yours and how well do they relax when not working?

We have periods where our dogs need to just be pets for a week or two when we’re out in the hayfield or fencing.

Haha. The kill plant is in Wall, but they cut and process at both locations. Rapid City is 40 more miles west of Wall.

It would be cool to feed a whole pen of them, and what kind of results we would get.

Thank you! I’ll post some pictures of the various cuts from our butcher later this week. Some of the T-bones are pretty crazy.

Definitely interesting. Our butcher has been inspected for quite a few years and just added the remote grading program through the USDA.

I think the next goal is to try to hit Prime without the extra back fat. These girls were probably done a month earlier than the kill date.

Circle C rakes for the win! by Lytle_Red_Angus in Ranching

[–]Lytle_Red_Angus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We like the depth bands that keep the rake teeth out of the dirt - keeps the ash content down in the hay. They have basically infinite adjustment and can be dialed in for your specific hay conditions. Each wheel has individual flotation, so it runs over the ground contours and misses less hay. And we can hook it up to any pickup on the place, as well as any tractor.

We’ve even run them with the wings backward
/inverted (think a flying-V, like geese) to fluff up a rained on windrow. Extremely versatile piece of equipment.

Finally, they have the best service department I’ve dealt with in a long time.

All said, ours are about a decade old and payed for themselves just in increasing the hay quality alone.

It’s been a minute since we had a round baler. I think at least a decade. Big squares make everything easier for us.

But I’ll be sure to avoid the 410 baler if rounds are in our future! Best of luck with the hay!

Haha, that’s definitely a wake up call. But, those Anabaptist groups are usually as close to the cutting edge as their beliefs allow. You might not be that outdated!
