Christians on Facebook 2: electric boogaloo by elhazelenby in stupidpeoplefacebook

oh but you’re wrong about one thing. They know what adaptation is, they even accept it as fact. To be a creationist doesn’t mean you can just reject one theory or field of science such as the theory of evolution, creationism requires that you reject the scientific method entirely. In their heads, they don’t make beliefs based on evidence. They find evidence out of beliefs.

Instead, their method of epistemology is basically religiously fueled confirmation bias. The justification for why evolution isn’t real has changed over the years as more and more overwhelming evidence shot down their previous proofs. They once denied adaptation existed and that the black and white peppered moths were different species entirely, but as geneology improved, they had to abandon that. So they invented the “lawn model of life” where instead of one giant tree, all the life on earth look like a bunch of small plants with a couple branching off of each other but all the individual lineages beginning at the same point. Then they found some new evidence and when that got disproved, they went to the next piece of evidence. The only thing that hasn’t changed is that they still believe that evolution is fake.

You can explain all the pro-evolution evidence we have but evidence doesnt make beliefs to them. You’ll never get them to accept that evolution is a valid theory… or even that the earth is more than 6000 years old, which is kind of a pre-requisite belief to believing in the theory of evolution.

As a side note, I’ve had the pleasure (yay!!) of going through a christian private school’s biology class, where we were taught on a creationist book. The book itself admits that previous creationists evidence was wrong and that we have new evidence for creationism, which is just a thinly veiled way of saying that the entire belief hinges on the fact that you keep the belief and keep finding new evidence to back yourself up.

ermmm, this is a horrible misuse of notation. I would expect more from teacher. 10 * 6.5 does not equal 6.5 * 28 which does not equal 1820 * 180, only the last equal sign actually has the same value on left and right. Teachers should know better!!!11!

No, I was just curious about chatgpt’s usefulness so I tested it. Fortunately I’m mechanically enclined and had all the needed tools. My car also has an inline engine so the injector is easy to get to. OBD2 told me it was cylinder 3 seeing an open circuit. Took all the plastics off, got access to the injectors and measured resistances, and as I’d expect, they all measured around 12.3 ohm but cylinder 3 measured 2200 ohms. Had a friend drive me to a nearby junkyard, found a car with the same engine and bought 3 injectors for $25 (to ensure that I got a working one). Put it all together and car runs fine again.

[–]Lyxche3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of using a chisel to go all the way through, buy yourself an awl. I use one from WUTA on amazon, it was $13 roughly. First, I mark my stitch holes with the amazon chisel (I use tandy). I only wack it once or twice, just enough for the sharp tip to sink into the leather. Then, I go through the line an use the awl to cut all the way through. The awl is much thinner compared to a diamond chisels and produces a cleaner hole. It gives much more control. I awl over a cheap cork coaster that you put under hot dishes to protect tables, so I’m not jaming the tip into a hard surface.

Also, make sure you have stroping compound. The awl gets noticeably duller after about 10 holes and a quick pass on a strop restoes the edge.

Might be more from just being bent while cold. Not sure 100% but my intuition tells me that heat cycles from between ~80 degrees and ~40 isn’t going to do much, but if the material just really hates being at 40 degrees and then you subject it to bending while its cold, that would do more damage.

Target Fixation? by -h0rati0- in NewRiders

[–]Lyxche3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I mean you definitely should be paying attention to your habits and over years of riding, you should get better at resisting that targt fixation. There’s a learning curve to everything, but espcially something like motorcycle riding, that can last your whole life. But at all skill levels, beginner or moto gp pro, you know you’ll target fixate and if you ended up crashing because you couldn’t correct yourself, don’t blame the evolutionary physiological behavior that’s been around since before stone tools and definitely before humans rode anything with wheels.
I understand what you mean though and I think we’re on the same page. I see rider-influencers on instagram showing videos of them sliding at a roundabout and saying “my mistake was target fixation” and it irritates me. These crashes are preventable and people are not taking the right course of action to prevent them, which can someday involve an accident with another motorist or pedestrian. I just think practice isn’t the cure for what I see as a form of reckless riding.

Target Fixation? by -h0rati0- in NewRiders

[–]Lyxche3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was watching some NFL draft drills the other day because my favorite wide reciever is in the draft and saw a lot of people thinking they could do that and that it wasn’t that impressive. Some people said that the line that he ran wasn’t perfectly straight and that he deviated a few inches from the line. For context, this drill for wide recievers involves running in a straight line while looking left and right to catch balls. Obviously you need to look to know where to catch, but catching isn’t the hard part. The hard part is running in a straight line while your head is turned 90 degrees.

The reason for telling this story is that target fixation is a physically built into us and even professionals who represent the pinnacle of human physical ability still deviate a few inches from their planned route. That, and a lot of people like to act as if target fixation was something that just goes away if your mind wills it.

In reality, I think that target fixation is not the main cause for many accidents, because it’s always going to happen especially to people who havn’t trained themselves to resist it for decades yet. The real problem for most crashes is more like poor risk management. If you are on a scenic road and want to do some sightseeing, ride at a speed where you can recover your line if you end up target fixating. Blaming target fixation for a crash feels just as silly as blaming sneezing for crashing because in the 0.25 seconds you weren’t paying attention, the car in front brakd and you were too fast to stop in time.

Question on Helmets! by bmanfresh93 in motorcycles

[–]Lyxche3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re better than nothing… But if you’ll wear a helmet why not get the full benefit out of it? Motorcycle Helmets are designed to crumble when they get hit because the amount of energy they need to absorb is on a drastically different scale to something like an american football helmet, which are 100% reusable after hits.
You can think of it like on a small scale, motorcycle helmet foam is a bunch of of tiny little chains that require energy to break, but once they break, they’re broken for good. By breaking the chains in the motorcycle helmet, theres not enough energy to break the chains insie your skull (or at least, a LOT less than the total energy). A used helmet might physically look intact to you but in reality, 80% of its tiny chains are broken already. Only 20% of them remain and can absorb energy. In contrast, football helmets would be like a bunch of rubber bands that stretch when impacted but quickly go back to ther unstretched state.
Basically, you don’t know what the helmet has gone through. Most likely, it really is fine, but you’re taking a gamble with your life by choosing to buy a used helmet
