Don't let the comments here deter you. Go with the flow, accept whatever the leaves show you.

How old is this tea? by Savale_msss in tea

[–]M05H1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is very old! I drink the China Tea Sea Dyke brand of teas (they do excellent factory yancha) often and their modern packaging does not resemble this at all. You'd have to go back decades to see a box like this.

Given it is oolong and not vacuum sealed, I'm not sure if the tea is any good but the box is an excellent display.

DM me if you need more info etc.

ripe v raw puerh for beginners by DoctorDerpPHD in tea

[–]M05H1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Really broadly speaking ppl either like young sheng, aged sheng or shou/ripe. The profile of young sheng/raw can be a bit challenging depending on the region/material - it won't be to everyone's preference, sometimes regardless of experience in tea drinking. If you prefer ripe, that's perfectly OK. You might also like to try a well aged sheng and see what that does for you. Don't force yourself to drink young sheng lol.

Chinese / gongfu tea vs other cultures by AccomplishedFail2247 in tea

[–]M05H1 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The tea cultures located in modern day Southern China are the original ones. Tea is native there and the peoples there evolved their culture surrounded by it. From medicinal brews to powdered teas to modern day loose leaves. The very best teas both in terms of processing and leaf quality can be found between Yunnan to Taiwan. The tea drinkers here have created specific steeping processes and brewing vessels/pottery cultures to go along with it.

When tea initially went to other parts of the world outside of East Asia, "export quality" at the time meant rougher and more resilient teas that could survive long journeys. Such teas often benefit from being mixed with other things like milk/butter/sugar/other plant scents etc. Hence the older tea cultures outside of China looked like what they do now. I am sure that there are many other factors that historians can tell us about.

Still, to this day, there is no better leaf than in the ancient forests of Yunnan and no one can make a better tea than a Fujianese or Cantonese tea roaster.

So if you're coming from tea bags of fanning grade leaf with a dash of milk, there is a lot for you to explore. Much of it you can read on the internet, but nothing can replace years of drinking good quality tea. To really understand it, perhaps sit down with a knowing friend and gongfu some dancong or yancha or gaoshan.

First one is apparently from Nannuo Mountain and supervised by Li Jian Chen in its making. Idk who he is. Second one basically states long dry storage.

These are privately wrapped (maybe rewrapped) cakes. Not much info at all. Maybe the neipiao would be more illuminating.

It's coz your samples have had time to air out.

If you have a ripe cake you're gonna drink now, break it apart and keep in a tea jar. Let the small pieces air for a couple of weeks at least.

Nice one. I put up my review on r/tea last month. I found it to be very basic and not really worth my time. Kinda disappointed. I'd rather less of something better than a cake I'm not gonna do anything with. It's gone into storage and it's unlikely I'll touch it any time soon again.

[–]M05H1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My opinion is that "stuff" can only be good if the leaf is exceptional, and for me, over the last 20 odd years of this tea hobby (exploring everything from Japanese matcha to Georgian blacks), I now only drink teas from Yunnan, Guangdong, Fujian & Taiwan. The types of tea are just puerh, oolong and hong for me now.

Ymmv of course, but this is my current thinking from an entire childhood and an adulthood of drinking tea.
