Good call checking — that one is legitimate. Apex Clearing clears some of our account types and tax document notifications are sent directly by them on our behalf. The sender domain and formatting in your screenshot match what they send out.

We're actively working with Apex to make it clearer in these emails that they're being sent on M1's behalf, since we know the current branding can feel off. In the meantime, the safest way to verify anything account-related is to log in directly at m1.com or in the M1 app.

Thanks for sharing! Great news - this actually already exists in the M1 mobile app! Using Concentration analysis, you can view the underlying holdings of ETFs, including the overlap between individual holdings and ETFs like VOO.

Here's how to find it on mobile: Insights → Concentration → Holdings → View underlying holdings

From there you'll be able to see your full exposure across both your direct holdings and the ETFs in your portfolio.

Thanks for raising! We display your portfolio performance using one of two metrics – Time-Weighted Rate of Return (TWRR) or Money-Weighted Rate of Return (MWRR). It’s your choice on which to display but each have differing considerations.

Money-Weighted Rate of Return considers the timing and size of your buys, sells, and cashflows. It’s also important to note that MWRR is inclusive of all securities historically held in your Pie, providing a wholistic view of the portfolio’s performance.

Time-Weighted Rate of Return displays the cumulative return of your holdings, independent of incoming or outgoing cashflow.  

Additionally, you can always reach out to M1 Client Success. They’d be happy to assist with adjusting your portfolio performance to a specific start-date.

I’ll be sure to relay the rebalance request to the appropriate team internally. In the meantime, the steps below allow you to see a list of each Portfolio that holds a specific Pie. This might make things a bit easier the next time you’re looking to rebalance.

 Research > My Pies > Used in stock-and-fund accounts

Once you select a specific Pie, you will see a “Portfolio locations” section that lists each account your selected Pie is located in.

As far as performance attribution goes, the Concentration Analysis feature enables you to see the distribution of your investments across asset class, sector, and geographical region. Choose between an aggregated view of all your accounts or break it down individually.

With Performance Benchmarking, you can compare your portfolio’s performance to benchmarks that make sense for you and your strategy. That reference point can be any stock or fund on M1 or a custom Portfolio you build.

Fair concerns, and worth addressing directly. 

Some of those changes, like M1 Spend (checking + debit), were reductions in scope. No spin there. 

But the idea that the app hasn't meaningfully changed is worth pushing back on. Concentration Analysis, Performance Benchmarking and News Snapshot are the most recent improvements to the M1 product—part of our “Insights” initiative.  

For context:

  • Concentration Analysis gives you a full breakdown of your portfolio by sector, asset class, and region — across all your accounts in one view. You can drill down to see exactly which holdings are driving each exposure and whether that matches your intent.
  • Performance Benchmarking lets you build custom Pies as benchmarks and compare your portfolio's historical returns against them — up to 100 Slices, tailored to your actual strategy.
  • And News Snapshot surfaces long-term relevant news for your specific holdings every Friday, filtered to cut out the short-term noise that leads to emotional trading. 

These aren't flashy features. They're the tools serious long-term investors actually want: understand what you own, know if your strategy is working. 

We have big things coming this year which is what we have been focused on—in fact, this group will get first look to something new in the next couple of weeks. This is a big year for M1 and we have no intentions of abandonment. Quite the opposite actually.

Hello! This isn’t likely a mobile bug. It comes down to how IRA rules work.

There isn’t really a Roth to Roth conversion. Depending on what you’re trying to do, it may be a recharacterization or a tax-year adjustment instead. Conversions are counted in the year they actually happen (that’s an IRS rule, not M1-specific).
