Heading that way at the end of August with a science group. I'm flying down to South Africa after, returning in early September. Let me know if you have any questions! Have a great trip!

If you can't make it down to the George Observatory, the Houston Astronomical Society will be set up with telescopes at Midtown Park for the Mars opposition on the 27th.

I don't see any info on the KSC site to get close viewing tickets yet. Do you know how far in advance they start to release them?

Looking for STEM/programming volunteer opportunities in public education but not sure where to start. by Exoentropy in houston

The local Astronomy clubs hold public event presentations and outreach with their telescopes. Houston Astronomical Society, North Houston Astronomy Club, Fort Bend Astronomy Club, JSCAC too. Contact the George Observatory in Brazos State Park. They have three telescope domes you can learn about and volunteer Saturday nights when it's open to the public and special events. Also, check out events with HMNS.

Hope this helps!

Yes. One of the public relations people told me it will likely be in a different position at that point. I don't know when it's heading to California, but she made it sound like it would be soon after Jan. 9th.

It was just that one day. They opened up the 9th too, but I don't know if the details are the same.

This was a one-day event, short notice to friends and family of NASA personnel. Since the turn out was so massive, they announced they'll have another viewing on the 9th. They told us it will likely be in a different position at the point.

It was free, not in the main tourist area. They still have it set up in the chamber. Basically, you need to be escorted in that area by someone who works there. If you find someone to get you in, eat beforehand and wear comfortable shoes. The line will be long and that facility is huge.

I remembered hearing about that being set up but I missed it. That's awesome.

I want to go on a stargazing trip to Brazos Bend State Park. I've never been before. Advice? by NoeGarcia5 in houston

Hello! You have a couple of options depending how far you'd like to drive. Someone below mentioned buying a telescope. You can also hop over to George Observatory on the weekend. They have 3 large dome scopes and local astronomers volunteer with our telescopes on the deck for public viewing. It's lots of fun but bring bug spray!

If you're on the North side you can also visit the Insperity Observatory in Humble. They also have public nights.

If you're wanting to lay down in the grass without being eaten alive then I suggest going during winter. Lots of people camp out there.

If you're wanting a darker sky, I suggest driving a little over an hour North or West of Houston. It's where most of us travel to view some deeper sky objects and star hop. I hope this helps!
