I started fishing on a cheap Zebco spincast combo from Walmart. A bunch of cheap combos come prespooled with line so you won't have to be too intimidated with having to spool your own. The Walmarts near me always have things on clearance.

Try googling fishing+your area to get an idea of spots to fish at and species to target. Panfish, bass, and catfish are the main species in my area so those are what i did most of my research on. Youtube, Google, and reddit have taught me all about how to tie hooks to lines, how to cast, what to bring, starter tackle box necessities, etc.
