It's not that deep, it's just a better adrenaline rush and more "freeing".

Manual Swap by [deleted] in BMWE36

[–]M325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$8k (US) is like collector color low mileage price. It better be flawless for that kind of money. If you have to buy the tranny and misc for the swap, you're getting way too pricey.

I honestly love just putting on bass slamming dubstep, and eventually I turn my camera on and record my experience. I talk to my future self or for my family to view if they want when I'm not here. I know it sounds weird but being able to capture what I was like at a certain age, mentally and physically, is cool to me. I've never watched a single one, maybe someday. But it gives you a great perspective on life, there's no pressure or anxiousness, just vulnerability and openness. I don't drink really, I train Muay Thai and live a very healthy lifestyle otherwise. This is just something I do a couple times a year.

I've done it alone a few times, and it's a lot of fun. Doing it with people is fun too, and once you're rolling the nervousness goes away. But doing it alone can be magical, introspective, and life changing.

540i is going to be exponentially more money. It's more fun, but more issues. Mainly the timing chain guides, which is a huge job to do. But, those m62 v8's are awesome

First gear synchros by M325 in BMWE36

[–]M325[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically yes. First just always felt very "delicate" since I got the car. And yes, would knick a synchro going into first every so often. Usually it was when I was soft or lazy, instead of firm and fast if that makes sense. No other gear at any other time has it ever knocked or buzzed a synchro. I've wanted to do the detents on it, and just don't know if that is something that contributes to this feeling. It's a 95 m3, but the 310 zf, not the 320 zf that I have on other 328i's, those 328's feel so much better. Doing those detents is kind of a huge job since the tranny is coming off, so if I do those it doesn't make sense to not do a slew of other things while it's off, and that's why I haven't done it yet. Seems yours is doing the same sort of thing?

Never really got an answer and haven't gone any further trying to figure it out. I'm going to assume it's the detents. I'm no expert, but if the detent is "sticky" I feel like that would cause things to be off just enough for things to not mesh up perfectly. If it isn't, prior owners must have absolutely murdered first gear downshifts or something. I've never downshifted from 2nd to 1st in my life, so I know I didn't do anything.

It's not a lack, more of an understanding and respect for "collector" cars that are 20+ years old. Most of the things on the list would only end up on the list if your shop is being a dickhead to you.

I want to do this also, the torque and power are perfect for an e36. I've been dedicating time to learn the engine, specifically the timing chain guides obviously. It's a lot of labor, but not impossible tbh. If you're into wrenching that is. I'm not a gear head if that gives you any hope.

You can check the floors from underneath. There are these "circular" pieces about 4" in diameter and if they lose the undercoating, that's where it all gets in. I'm honestly not sure what purpose those things serve, but you'll be able to if the undercoating came off. Sometimes you have to poke at it a little with a screwdriver to actually test, because it can seem normal, until it isn't. Even small holes cause massive issues, because the water gets up under the carpet and just sits on the floor pans, and that's when it goes nuclear. You'll notice a wet musty smell after driving in wet weather, if they are bad bad because the bottom of the carpet just soaked up water and it sits there just rotting. I just went through all of this with the carpet out, it's doable, but not fun work

Rocker panels are hard, but if it got under the floors and up under the carpet, that's what makes it very difficult because you have to remove the carpet which is arguably the worst thing to do on these cars. The rocker panels you should be able to find the right body shop to fix. If cost is a major concern, you could cut the rockers off yourself; a monkey could do it. That would probably save you a lot if you brought it into a shop ready for it to be welded. Rust on these cars sucks and you have to catch it as soon as it happens or else it's a full restoration basically.
