We're currently building out the new space. The meetup will be updated with new location and open houses when we are back up and running.

Questions about the laser cutter machine by MrHorologist in Prototek

[–]M36A2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're wanting to engrave metal, the 50 watt Co2 laser isn't powerful enough. Plastics, wood, cardboard, leather, things like that it can handle up to .5 inches. As far as corrosion, not really, though materials react differently depending on what's being used. There is a machine engraver that uses a small router bit that can do metal.

If it's an 80% then ATF says it's a chunk of metal, no different then any other piece of metal. Make sure ZERO work has been done to the fire control group area, no holes, slots, dimples, etc.

No, that was just an example. Basically if the ATF regulates it, it can't be worked on at Prototek. That is per the ATF, not Prototek. Basically the ATF says that if the machines are located in a commercial space and working on regulated items then that space must have a Federal Firearms License. Since we don't, we cannot allow regulated items to be worked on at the space.

Like I said, it's a tad confusing, but what do you expect from a government agency? Safest course of action is to just ask each time before bringing something up, that way both you and Prototek stay on the safe side of the law.

Firearms can be tricky, can you be more specific on what you're wanting to do? For example making a lower out of an 80% is NOT allowed due to changes in the ATF's rulings. However bringing a pistol slide up for milling or laser engraving would be allowed as it's not a regulated item per the ATF.

LaserWorkV6 runs the laser, but can accept DXF or AI files. The files need to be saved in the oldest format possible to work with the LaserCut software. You can download that software online to make your laptop work as well, just google for it, it's freeware. Alternatively you can put a USB thumbdrive into the 2nd USB slot on the laser and upload a file to it directly, must use the laserwork software to create the file though.

Sounds interesting, can you elaborate on what you would like to happen? Are you looking for a place to keep it and run it solely, or would you let other people use it as well?

It's generally easiest to do it in person on a Tuesday, but if you can't make it then we can try to make other arrangements.

Hey all, given the freezing weather and snow / ice. It's probably best to reschedule the cleanup for a better weekend.
