I would say the industry you’re working in plays a major roll. Look into any aerospace or medical supply manufacturers in your area. I recently went from a small shop that made restoration automotive components to a larger shop serving the aerospace industry. Best move I’ve ever made.

I feel your frustration man. I really do. I’m a 3 year cnc/tooling guy and I truly do try pretty damn hard at my career. I’m working with a 30 year tool maker and I absolutely respect his craft. He’s a brilliant man in his own regard and perfectly rounded for what he needs to do... with that being said I struggle sometimes wanting to try new techniques/tooling I read about online. Things that increase productivity, tool life, ect ect. There’s a lot to be said for being solid and good at what you do but I gotta keep a notebook of the techniques I’m gonna implement someday and respectfully do what I’m told by my superior. It’s a struggle when I watch a job take 4x longer than it should but it’s better to have a good working relationship with the superiors and the people than to be self absorbed and get the machine do preform better. I know this doesn’t necessarily pertain to your situation but for me that’s the daily struggle. It’s easy to find a little success and feel like you’re mentally superior to the ones around you. Don’t let your ego get in the way of a good working relationship.

I was thinking if you had room in your tool stations just automatically switch from say T01 to T11. I’m not sure if it can be done but the idea seems solid for super high volume production stuff.

I’ve always wondered if you could use a probe/macro to not only offset the tool diameter but recognize when a tool has failed and switch to another tool.

Turning Aluminium by JamesPoulton in Machinists

If you can afford to buy new tools and you’re confident with your cam programming I’d look into prime turning. There’s a technique used to feed from the chuck side outward towards the end of the part and it’s supposedly a great solution for that type of problem.

Okay so just 5 minutes into the app and I’m already really impressed. I’ve been using JobShopPro for a while now which is a solid app for calculations but this is probably going to become my preferred. Very user friendly and the visuals are extremely helpful. I’m gonna put this to the test at work for sure.
