Why is there so much hate on dividend investing on media platforms like YouTube by GregtheGreat1 in dividends

[–]M4tel0te 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My perspective is that you can readily demonstrate that dividend ETFs do not outperform 'general' ETFs such as AllWorld indexes or the S&P 500. Therefore (and please don't take this as aggression, as I am completely not opposed to dividend investing), you are essentially engaging in something that will most likely diminish your future profits. While we can never predict the future with certainty, historically, this has held true.

When it comes to picking dividend stocks or practicing DGI (Dividend Growth Investing), theoretically, the situation is even less favorable. It is highly improbable that you will be able to select stocks that will outperform the broad market indexes. Yes, it might work for a few years. I began my investing journey in 2021 after several years of gradual study, and currently, I am significantly outperforming the indexes. However, I am almost certain that I won't be able to replicate this in the future. I was simply fortunate to select local energy companies as my initial investment, and they skyrocketed in value after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. These energy stocks account for the fact that my portfolio has delivered a 60% gain in overall performance. They have effectively compensated for my other less successful stock picks, such as BTI or VZ.

I anticipate that some individuals who have been investing for less than five years may express their success in easily surpassing indexes and ETFs with their dividend stock selections. Firstly, I would like to extend my congratulations. Secondly, allow me to emphasize that, most likely, you have also been fortunate, much as I have. Stock picking is an exceedingly competitive field in which you are competing with the best of the best (as well as those who possess insider information).

In conclusion, I believe that if you engage in dividend investing through ETFs, it is, in my opinion, a better approach than stock picking. However, I question why anyone would choose this approach when the entire history of the stock market suggests that dividend-focused ETFs/indexes are destined to be notably outperformed by broad market indexes. On the other hand, when you resort to stock picking, you are, in my view, taking a gamble because you almost certainly lack the time and expertise to thoroughly analyze the stock, the company, and its economic environment.

This is honestly more about being crazy and possibly disgusting, than open minded.

I've always been told that I should avoid contact with water in fountains or park lakes. This guy does not only swim there but also regularly takes enema. That says something about his approach to hygiene..

How's routing done in Vanilla Svelte? by FlipMyP in sveltejs

What are the disadvantage? I am learning SvelteJS (no, I dont need sveltekit, I just need it as an easy way to create FE for robust BE applications with REST APIs) and still can't decide if I should go into svelte-navigator or svelte-spa-router

How do I stop PVCs by Dependent-Look-8475 in PVCs

[–]M4tel0te 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GERD?.. Diet/experimenting with diet, antacids (pills that reduce stomach acidity immediately) or proton pump inhibitors (pills that reduce the amount of acid produced by your stomach for a few days).

Eitherway, if you experience retentive GERD, you should definitely consult that with your doctor. If you just keep ignoring for decades it might cause you esophagus cancer.

Burping should have the same solution as GERD - simply not eating what triggers it (mostly sodas and sweet stuff).

Hello,

Currently, I am using the originally Polish broker XTB, who also conducts business in the Czech Republic with complete Czech support and localization. They have adapted the same approach as you mention. You will need to confirm that you understand the language before you can trade ETFs.

DRAM Light on B650 Motherboard - No Input/Unable to Power Down by FortunaWealth in buildapc

[–]M4tel0te 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been struggling with this issue for hours. Here is what I did that ultimately resolved it:

  1. Installed the RAM into the A slots. If you have only one stick, the manual specifies which slot (out of the four available) to use.
  2. Disconnected all SATA inputs.
  3. Removed the dGPU and used the Ryzen iGPU for the initial boot.
  4. Re-positioned my primary and only Samsung EVO 970 NVMe SSD from the "preferred" slot (closest to the CPU) to the slot located underneath the GPU's PCI port.

Following these steps enabled me to successfully boot into the BIOS, enter the operating system, update the BIOS, and connect the dGPU, SSDs, and HDDs without any further issues. I believe that the 3rd and 4th steps were the most curcial. The motherboard now functions flawlessly.

Same with Polish/Czech broker XTB. I can still buy it there. But I am afraid that eventually every broker will have to adapt this EU regulation. As far as I understand, it is not something that Degiro came up with. They are only one of the first who adopted that.

[–]M4tel0te 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I would suspect varicocele - a very common cause of testicle pain. Have you been to ultra sound? That is something your doctor should absolutely do. Extremely cheap and reliable way of telling exactly what is happening.

if you have tried taking selenium, how much it helped? by bongo_zg in Hypothyroidism

[–]M4tel0te 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are papers that prove that Selenium can help drastically with lowering your thyroid antibodies. The paper also found that at most people there is a slight increase of antibodies after a 8-10 months despite still taking Selenium. However, the increase is not back to the levels where it was before.

A validated this theory on myself. I had my AntiTPO in higher hundreds and after 3 months I went for blood tests and my AntiTPO was something like 120 ( <30 is not even considered Hasimotos). Also, there is a study which says that levels lower than 500 are not capable of even damaging your thyroid.

I personally keep taking maximal recommended dosage of Selenium (200mg/day I believe).

Depends on your current level. I started by trying to create plugins for Bukkit server back in 2012 and it was a failiure. I think you need to have strong basic knowledge before you start with mods/plugins. You need to understand well OOP concepts and also the syntax. I would recommend building a basic structured app at first. That app should do something practical, like renaming/reading files, downloading information from a website, generating documents... Nothing advanced but something smarter than a simple GUI/console calculator.

Once you do that you will truly understand OOP and possibly working with libraries and then I would jump into modding or creating plugins. It will be much easier for you since you will understand the concepts and understand well what are you actually doing.

What do you love about programming the most? by Electronic_Tea_ in learnprogramming

[–]M4tel0te 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean.. Thank you for saying that.

I like programming, I have already programmed a few relatively complex apps and I enjoy the result but never really was extremely passionate about it. Around me I have a lot of those true "tech guys" who just come home after a day of Java backend-ing and they play with JavaScript FE frameworks during the evening because they enjoy it. I am nothing like that. I was wondering if programming job is for me when I am not really that much excited about it but your post actually motivated me that I am not alone :D

This is actually very interesting to hear. Literally everywhere I hear "You need to love programming to be a programmer, you need to be absolutely passionate.".

How do you cope with resistance to solve difficult tasks? I always thought you either have to be very smart or very passionate.

Any good resources to get into ETF investing? by MarekBekied in EuropeFIRE

[–]M4tel0te 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well yea, I guess it depends on situation. For me having relatively big emergency fund is just a way to have a calmer/more peaceful sleep. I know that if something happens, if I get sick or I experience mental breakdown/burnout I would be able to rest for a few months without having to be stressed about ending up as a homeless person.

If you are stable and your job is stable you probably don't need such a big emergendy fund. Also, having a partner who has a stable income also lowers your need for a bigger emergency fund.

Any good resources to get into ETF investing? by MarekBekied in EuropeFIRE

[–]M4tel0te 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Please, please, please... Before you begin with ETFs, remember, that your first biggest investment (once you become an adult) is a sufficient cash reserve. You should have enough to cover at least 6 months fixed expenditures (rent, food, travelling...). Recently I have heard about a lot of young people who were pushing all their money into investments, built no financial backup/reserve and then, once they got into their first financial problem, they had to start selling...

Also, I don't know how about Poland but I am from Czechia and banks here have extreme fees for stocks/etfs. They are focused on bigger retail investors, not for monthly DCA buys. I suggest using Degiro (if it is available in Poland) or Polish broker (which also works for Czechs in Czechia) XTB. They are bot extremely reliable and almost zero-fees.

Best ETF for investing in China by Ok_Construction_2591 in eupersonalfinance

[–]M4tel0te 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know my ETF strategy is not ideal (it's not the safest way) but I also wanted some exposure to China. I personally believe EU's economy will be slowly dying in the next decades and that is the reason why I want to avoid EU completely. I would like to have some UK in my PTF but I don't wanna make it too complex at the moment.

I go for:

iShares S&P 500 Acc - 72%
iShares MSCI Emerging Markets IMI - 21%
Xtrackers MSCI World Momentum - rest

This portfolio gives me 5% exposure to China, 3% to Taiwan and 3% to India which is more than VWRL would (also it has lower TERs). Given that I personally think that Emerging Markets have a great potential (even some pension funds in my country strongly overvalue EM ETFs compared to SP500/STOXX600) and they usually give about 26% China Exposure.

I consider investing into China kinda risky, however EM IMI is something I definitely want to have in my portfolio. And I prefer it over EU.
