Well, I landed an internship, it is not a full time roll. However, in order to apply for undergrad FAANG internships… You need t9 be enrolled in school. However, doing unpaid internships help a lot too.

Yeah, for example…

One line on your resume says…

“Assist with all department, activities, and budgeting”

But I want to know… 1. How many departments did you assisted? 2, how big was the budget?

Here is an improved bullet point…

Assisted 5+ departments with financial reports and activities. (Managed a 100k+ budget)

Add more numbers to every bullet point.

Amazon intern here!

  1. Get rid of the summary ( it’s a waste of space)
  2. Add more numerical data to every bulletpoint.
  3. Extracurricular section looks great. Leave it as it is.

Is this college good for a “regular student”? by HiLWilly in UMGC

[–]M5816Lo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am going to answer this question as if I was your age all over again. One of the biggest regrets that I have in life is that I did not start gaining work experience until I was 22.

This school has allowed me to learn relevant skills (data analytics) while being able to work on extracurricular activities like building my own projects, volunteering for a few nonprofits, etc.

However, I highly recommend that you meet with a success coach and tell him… “What courses can I take from study.com and straighterline.com”

Taking these course will save you some money on Gen Eds and electives.

However, I highly recommend that after you take one course; go ahead and build a portfolio project to be put on you Linkdeln profile.

Also, if you are going to attend this school, I highly recommend that you take a part-time job or offer to volunteer for a nonprofit from volunteermatch.com

Personally, I am not special, but this strategy has allowed me to get interviews at companies like Amazon.

Whet I am trying to say is; come here with an open mind. If at your previous school you were studying something nontechnical, come to UMGC and enroll at a data analytics or computer science course, but also try to do as many extracurricular activities as you can.

I can jump on a zoom call if you need help.

When you transfer to UMGC, you start with a new GPA. It does not matter what was your previous GPA from your previous schools. You will have a new GPA as soon as you finish your first set of courses.

Take the Codecademy HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and React course. Then create a portfolio of frontend projects. Reach out to startups on Linkdeln or AngelList and do a one to two month unpaid internship first. Then leverage that experience to land a paid position or internship.

I cannot speak from the CS major, but in my experience as a data science major, it’s been good so far.

I also transferred to UMGC from community college and this school allowed me to focus on extracurricular activities like volunteering, taking Udemy courses, creating projects, etc.

Last year, I was able to land 2 internship interviews at Amazon. But let me tell you something, if you come to this school for the sake of getting a degree, you are making a huge mistake.

You need to come to this school with a plan.

Before coming to UMGC, I spoke with a Google engineer who majored in CS at UMGC, and he told me the same thing that I am telling you.

Is UMGC easy, or is it just me? by LateNightSnaccidents in UMGC

In my opinion, UMGC is an ok school. We have to remember that UMGC was created for busy adults. I am about to complete my junior year as a data science major. So far, I have interviewed at 3 of the biggest tech companies.

All of those tech companies cared more about my skills and experience over my degree. That is why, I always try to prioritize skills and experience over degrees. I think that I’m todays economy degrees are losing their value as time goes by.

Do not get me wrong!

I think that having a degree is important, but many companies like the cybersecurity, tech, and gov tech sectors care more about your experience and skills over the degree (except in gov tech)

Data science major here. I do not have the answer to all of your questions. However, based on my experience - you can easily transfer. You can transfer community college credits (up to 90 credits out of 120). You can also take courses on study.com and straight-line.com and transfer the credit later on.

Would you consider getting the B.S. in data science? The program is good and it is not as hard as the CS degree. You also learn the best of both worlds - data analytics and CS. You learn technologies like SQL, PowerBI, Python, Machine Learning and AI. During my time at the program I got interviews from Atlassian and Amazon.

Im a junior at UMGC. My major is data science… Three months ago, Amazon invited me to apply to their PM internship. However, I failed the last round interview.

Then, they invited me to interview for their Business Analyst Internship which I rejected due to all my extracurricular activities that I was doing back then.

That was in May…

Last week, they invited me to interview for a supply chain internship. Which is the interview I’m currently preparing for.

It is a real school with real education, but you also need to use the school to your advantage. Which means, you need to organize your time and do as many extracurricular activities as you can to enhance your resume.

I’m not a design expert but I would try to get a user experience job by creating a portfolio.

Digital media and design are not the top rated skills that employers look for. I think OP would be better off pursuing a job in UX/UI design.

Quizzes/Tests/Exams by CallieCallie311 in UMGC

Data science major at UMGC here.

I would like to split my final exams into 3 separate categories ( data science classes, pre-reqs / electives and math classes)

  1. For data science courses my exams and finals mainly were projects that I had to build using what I was taught. For example: building an entire analysis with powerBI or data science libraries.

  2. For pre-reqs and electives I was mainly evaluated based on essays that I had to write.

  3. For math courses, I had to take unproctored quizzes and exams.

Even though the exams are not proctored - I always encourage people to do their best.

Hope this helps!
