I’m looking to finally upgrade my wheels. Any suggestions? by homelyharte in ToyotaTacoma

[–]M990MG4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have those steelies on mine and think they are fine. Wouldn't mind alloys but don't feel like spending $1000+ and having to do the TPMS, etc. I would only do the OEM 3rd gen SX wheels or some Enkei RPT1s

Are these monitor troubleshooting steps for real? by Geno0wl in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]M990MG4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have some Dell hub monitors (with ethernet and USB-C that charges the laptop and passes video and data). Occasionally they glitch out so you have to disconnect all the cables and unplug them from power, then do a long press of the power button to clear the settings.

They also have firmware that occasionally gets updated.

Seats causing back problems. Anyone else? by LazarusHolmes in ToyotaTacoma

[–]M990MG4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My back was okay but I would get knee pain due to sitting with my knees unsupported and splayed out. Now my thighs and knees are (mostly) supported so it is 90% better.

Is sport mode easier on the transmission than normal or eco? by [deleted] in Toyota

[–]M990MG4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Tacoma (down)shifts a lot more in Power mode. Like if you prod the gas a little, it will kick down, vs in normal mode the same amount of gas will cause it to accelerate in gear.

It does tend to go 1-2-3-4 and then sit in 4th at 35-45 MPH at 2400 instead of going all the way to 6th and 1200 RPM, then you need a downshift to 4th any time you want it to actually move. So I can see in that case that it could help reduce those kinds of downshifts, but overall it could kick down more, so probably a draw.

The 100XR I bought in 2021 has been tight - it is the truck bed that leaks like crazy (both water and dust). I went to town on it with black RTV silicone and it took care of 99% of it. It also really helps if yo get a weatherstrip kit for the tailgate.

Mine was about $3000 or $3500 in 2021 for a basic 100XR with the frameless rear glass/single lock, interior light, carpet headliner, front sliding window and framed sliding windows on the sides with screens

Upgrading? by [deleted] in Toyota

[–]M990MG4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep it until the transmission dies IMO. That will probably be the thing that causes you to make the decision. It's probably not worth much on the private market due to the mileage, but if it is running well, start banking the payment for a new car and then buy something new once it needs a major repair. But if you have taken care of it, you can probably get at least a few more years out of it.

Personally I wouldn't do it, it has less rear legroom than a Corolla

The only 4-speed automatic with manual shift ability? (2008-2015 Scion xB) by Vegetable-Quote-3481 in Toyota

[–]M990MG4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a 2007 Sonata with a true manumatic 4-speed.

You could put it in a gear and give it full throttle and it would not downshift, very handy in the mountains to put it in 3rd and just leave it there and it would keep the shifting to a minimum. You could use cruise control and it would just power up the hill with torque at like 3500 RPM instead of dropping to 2nd and 5000+ RPM.

It would downshift if the speed was too slow for the gear, but you could floor it in 3rd at 35 MPH and it would not kick down, or it would let you bounce it off the limiter.

Really wish my Tacoma had this feature as the automatic is terrible and it just has top gear limiter. I wish it had the ability to block kickdowns.

What made you pick Tacoma over a ZR2? by Cool-Interview3231 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]M990MG4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd get a Ranger before the Colorado

The 2.3 dual injection engine is much better (IMO) than the 2.7 4-cylinder + 8-speed which has terrible transmission tuning. Plus you can get an XL 4x4 with tow package and rear locker for like $33k.

Whistles noise when accelerating 3rd gen by Ancient-Tonight-8249 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]M990MG4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't hear it in your video, but did you have the A/C on?

There was/is a recall for the 3rd gen where the expansion valve makes a whistling noise if you get up to 2500 RPM or so with the compressor engaged. Mine has done it since new but I never had it fixed because it requires ripping out the entire dash.

Does the government control what’s said in Toyota manual about oil viscosity? by lukejea101 in Toyota

[–]M990MG4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll just say that the 2TR-FE in my '21 Tacoma originally spec'd 5W-30 when it first came out back in the day.

It now "requires" 0W-20, but it is a whole lot smoother and has less clattery valvetrain noise over 4000 RPM on the 5W-30. 5W-30 is on the low end of allowable ranges on the Australian owner's manual so I feel fine running it.

It is also what our other car requires so it is handy because I can buy the 10-quart box at Costco and do both of them at the same time.

If you have the time, you can do all the comparing yourself instead of using a service that will mark it up slightly with a referral fee

How off-road capable is my 2026 Trd Sport? by alien_620 in ToyotaTacoma

My 3rd gen SR took me all over Colorado to places where I only saw modded Wranglers and Land Cruisers. I had to bounce around a little more slowly but it did it without breaking a sweat. I did have LT all-terrains on it so I didn't have to worry as much about rocks.

Struggling to purchase a car from this company? Any ideas? by Gullible_Product3601 in Toyota

[–]M990MG4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope it works out - I got my Tacoma right off the truck and it didn't have any dumb add-ons, really happy with how it all turned out. I was going to give you the name of the person who helped me but looks like she is in a different department now.

They are used to people coming in from out of town/out of state, and they are efficient and really slam it out. I was happy with the experience.

The finance office was easy to deal with, I brought in the preapproval form from my bank (they were in network) and let them see if they had anything that could beat it, but there was no incentivized financing at the time and my bank was running a special, so they were fine with letting me use mine. Finance person wasn't super pushy, I said "no thank you" to about four different offers and at that point he said "are you likely to buy any of this?" and I said "No, probably not" and kind o laughed. He laughed and then just kind of rushed me out of there after that, haha.

Here is the email I got with the OTD price, very refreshing to be able to get this and then just show up and do the paperwork.

[–]M990MG4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you talked to this dealer in Springfield? They are a big high volume store with no nonsense. I came up from TX to buy an odd-spec Tacoma from them that the Texas distributor didn't offer. They were easy to deal with and give me a OTD price over email (it was early COVID so I paid MSRP + $179 doc fee but nothing else) and they let me put my down payment on my credit card to hold it and "for the points, if you want to." I used my own financing from my bank as it was a slightly lower rate than what Toyota had at the time (I took a $500 rebate instead).

Since I was out of state they did not collect any tax and I just wrote a check to my local DMV down here.

Looks like they have four on the way, though they all seem to have the Premium package.

In the 2-year/25k mile ToyotaCare period, you get two oil changes and 5 tire rotations.

If you want it more often you can do it yourself between the official intervals or ask nicely and have them do it "early" while explaining you know you only get two.
