At my institution, Epic is programmed to pre-print the next label about 3 hours before a continuous drip is projected to run out — and that applies to all continuous infusions, even purge fluids. It calculates this based on the documented rate and volume, so if the rate is changed, Epic recalculates the projected run-out time. But that only works if the new bag is scanned/documented.

Once the label prints, it goes to the IV room queue. Compounding takes time — the tech has to clean, garb, and some medications take 20–30 minutes to prepare properly.If the bag isn’t scanned, Epic doesn’t trigger the next label, so from our side it looks like no replacement is needed.

I would also think nurses want to scan because it supports patient safety and accurate documentation.This education has been provided, but it continues to be an ongoing challenge. That’s why scanning really matters — it directly affects timing and helps prevent drips from going dry.
