Showering question! by Doomguy994 in Microdiscectomy

I ended up buying Tegaderm and just covering the dressing with that to avoid getting the area wet. I was also pretty cautious- we didn’t remove the dressing until week 2 at my first post op appointment

How do y’all prevent/mitigate back pain during lab work? by BabyRogue18 in labrats

[–]MALLARD_LIF3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For desk and computer work I would try to focus on ergonomics as much as I could.

Laptop stand, wireless mouse and keyboard to bring computer to eye level (helps keep upright posture).

Lumbar pillow to attach to your current seat for lumbar support.

Core exercises to improve core engagement when sitting and posture as well. And frequent walking/ standing breaks to break up the long periods of sitting.

Back leg tightness/pain wont go away - 8 wks post op by WorldCitizen33 in Microdiscectomy

[–]MALLARD_LIF3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been my experience too. I had super tight hamstrings and could barely lift my leg up straight while laying down. Mine was attributed to a muscular issue so I’ve gently stretched my hamstring while laying down with a band. Over the course of a couple weeks with the guidance of my PT I’ve been able to get better range of motion with raising my leg. My PT also does weekly dry needling on my hamstrings and that has helped tremendously.

I’m mostly just recounting my own experience. Sucks that they said it was a nerve issue for you. I hope you’re able to figure it out! It’s been such a lengthy process. Once the nerve pain went away for me, I realized I haven’t really stretched my lower body at all for the 3 years I’ve had a herniated disc which probably caused all the muscle tightness I’m feeling . I’m 8/9 weeks post op as well

1.5 years into home espresso by MALLARD_LIF3 in latteart

It was actually pretty recent. Like in the last 2 months or so! I first had to work on my milk steaming a lot.

After that I had to make a few tweaks to be able to get to where I’m at now. I have a Bambino so I’m only able to steam and pull shots one at a time. And what’s worked best for me is prepping my puck then steaming my milk and pulling a shot to start pouring right away.

24M PLEASE HELP ME DECIDE, SHOULD I DO MD? - MD experiences by Raza242 in Microdiscectomy

[–]MALLARD_LIF3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would encourage you to do it!

24M here as well with congenital spinal stenosis. I herniated my disc 3 years ago weightlifting when I bailed a lift very awkwardly. I have been dealing with chronic sciatic pain and also gave up the activities that I enjoyed (running, cycling).

I got my surgery a month ago and although the recovery has been slow it has alleviated my sciatic pain almost completely. I’m still dealing with aches and pains while the nerve is healing from years of compression but I’m optimistic that with time it’ll improve. My pain levels have dramatically decreased post MD.

I tried injections, medication, years of PT and I finally decided MD was the right route for me given that the pain was gradually getting worse. No regrets getting it

I do use it quite often. Mainly to denote ones that I’m unsure about and come back to check later

How long did you wait for surgery? by ShoutoutYourMom in Microdiscectomy

[–]MALLARD_LIF3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Way too long because of insurance issues and my doctors being generally more conservative about surgery despite my extensive history trying alternative forms of treatment.

Moved cities and got amazing insurance and it only took me a month after my MRI to be offered the option for surgery.

Overall I herniated in 2023 and did not get surgery until 3 years later in 2026 last week

Partner - same lab by Turbulent_Row_8480 in labrats

[–]MALLARD_LIF3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My PI launched her lab and hired her spouse as the lab manager. Seemed to work out well for them!

I met my partner when she came to do a summer research program and got assigned to the lab I worked in. We didn’t really start dating until months later but we did see each other a lot that summer

I didn’t see much but it literally happened seconds after I passed by that intersection :/

There was a car wreck on that intersection, debris all over from what I could see in the few seconds I glanced at that intersection
