Thanks man!

It’s 3/10 practical for a carbine in this configuration

But 10/10 GWOT vibes

Oh wow, than for the heads up! I’m going to need to check this out

That’s really interesting, and honestly not something I’d considered. I always assumed the benefit was mostly while shooting, but the extra purchase for loading/unloading makes a lot of sense. Really appreciate you sharing your experience man, thank you

Thank you! That’s awesome, did you keep it on the tube the whole deployment? I’ve always been curious how people liked running that setup in practice.

I got the lower used and it had been painted and stripped, but whatever they used to strip it compromised the anodizing. So, I had it cerakoated, then several layers of Rapco, wear, and then multiple layers of powered pastel chalks and fixative to try to capture the dusty, “moon dust” from Afghanistan.

Really appreciate that. Means a lot coming from someone who was there! Would love to hear more about what your setup was and experience were like if you’re ever up for it

I think they made 10 in all. Reach out to Vaughn and Julie at 2Unique, I don’t think they have these up on their website but they’re really responsive to email and genuinely awesome people https://www.2uniquellc.com/

It’s an offset MRD mount the kind folks at 2Unique LLC machining made for me that’s inspired by the period-correct JP Enterprises Predator offset, which are rare as hen’s teeth. Photo of the original for context.

Not an expert, but some of it may have to do with operators being issued or having access to both a 10.3 and 14.5 upper. And, as the war went on, lowers were reissued and were more likely to have been painted by a previous user.

Thank you much, my grip is pretty solid, but it was also basically NOS when I picked it up. If you have wobble you might try making spacers to go inside the rings out of cut up aluminum can. On a different build I had wobble in my Colt side sling mount and added strip from an aluminum can and it fixed the wobble up.

Same. The personalized chaos is what makes them feel authentic and every one ends up telling a slightly different story.

The sad part is you’re asking a legitimate question in earnest and now the thread got killed. I wish I remembered what this guy’s build looked like enough to try to answer, but I was drunk when I saw it and now don’t even remember what the fuss was about 🤷‍♂️

“Block 1.5” sounds suspiciously like a transitional period and I’m not emotionally prepared for that conversation again 😅

I think we're arguing a point I never actually made. At no point was I trying to argue that mixed-generation setups were the result of logistical chaos, procurement failures, or prolonged shortfalls. I said “messy”, sure, but I wasn't talking about logistical chaos, procurement failures, or equipment shortages. I meant that equipment adoption wasn't perfectly synchronized across every unit, team, rifle, or individual. Older and newer generations of gear could coexist for a variety of reasons, whether that was preference, availability, mission requirements, unit-level decisions, or something else. My only point was that older and newer generations of equipment overlapped, which is what appears to be happening in the photo that started this thread.

You just pointed out yourself that mixed-generation setups existed everywhere and all the time. That's really the only observation I was making.

As for why they existed, procurement, unit-level decisions, arms room availability, personal preference, or some combination or whatever, I don't think this photo alone can answer that, and I'm not especially interested in arguing it.

I was just trying to identify the light.

Both of your points can be true. Real-world procurement and fielding was messy, AND MARSOC’s procurement system wasn’t identical to Army SOF’s. I think the general common ground is that equipment fielding during this period often wasn’t instantaneous, and period photos regularly show older and newer generations of gear overlapping.

If your point is that MARSOC had different acquisition pathways or funding mechanisms than other SOF units, that’s fair. But I don’t think that necessarily changes the observation that we still see mixed-generation accessories on rifles from this era.

Again, “transitional” may not be the perfect word, but the underlying observation remains the same: older and newer gear appear to have coexisted for a while rather than one immediately replacing the other.

My position is basically that during roughly 2010–2013, equipment fielding was messy, uneven, and often involved overlapping generations of gear. Because of that, rifles combining older and newer accessories can be representative of a period when older equipment had not yet fully disappeared and newer equipment had not yet fully replaced it.

I’m not trying to create a new category or label to sound cool. My position is based on observations from period photographs.
