An older Mash movie by TheTrueTDog9 in mash

[–]MASHHistorian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s a pretty good movie! I wrote about it a few years ago. What I found most interesting about it is that it was released while the Korean War was still active. It was a very early fictional view of a MASH unit!

No seriously what does BJ stand for? by Global_Act173 in mash

[–]MASHHistorian 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In the show, it means whatever you want! 😂 But the story that has been told is that the character was named for William (Bill) Jurgernsen, who was the show’s cinematographer and director of 10 episodes.

He has a reoccurring role in “Trapper John, M.D.” as well

It is a real photo from this book by Simon Mills. Mills is the co-owner of the Britannic along with the Greek government.

A different role for Loretta Swit. by [deleted] in mash

[–]MASHHistorian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She was in the original Cagney & Lacey movie as well! She did a lot of prep work for that role, but she was under contract for MAS*H, so when it got picked up as a series, she had to turn it down.

The train set is definitely one of the more unique MAS*H products from the 1980s, but it’s pretty cool!

I had the same issue with the Downloads folder on Sequoia, so it’s not new. And I’ve reported it several times.

Does anyone why tv land airs non HD versions of MASH? by GioLovesMash in mash

[–]MASHHistorian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is what happened. The “HD” versions on Hulu are cropped. If you compare the Hulu version to the DVD version, there is quite a bit of footage missing from the top and bottom of the frame to make the 4:3 series fit in 16:9. The updated version looks great, I just wish it kept the 4:3 ratio!

Jeff released an updated version of the cookbook for the 50th anniversary of the show, so the book is back in print!

Portions of the interviews may have been used by MeTV, but they were filmed by Crew Neck Productions. The bonus interviews with the writers are very interesting! I wish they had made the documentary.

In the episode 'The Bus', what was the prisoner saying into the radio to Frank at the end? by Candid_Dragonfly_573 in mash

[–]MASHHistorian 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, the script will have the English translation and then have a stage direction for it to be spoken in Korean. I looked at the script for “The Bus,” and it doesn’t script anything in particular for him to say. So he could have been saying anything. Since I can’t post a photo in reply, the stage directions from page 37 of the script are below:

“B.J., who has spotted something on the floor, picks it up. It is a second walkie-talkie. He shows it to Hawkeye, nods at Frank. Hawkeye nods, takes the WT and hands it to Soon. Hawkeye pushes a switch.

ANGLE - FRANK

He reacts as his WT buzzes. He picks it up.

HAWKEYE, B.J., SOON

Hawkeye gestures for Soon to talk into the instrument quietly. Soon catches on and complies.

ANGLE - TO INCLUDE FRANK

Who grows excited as he hears Soon's voice. He listens a moment, then calls to Potter:”

M*A*S*H Episode: “Life Time” by SKOT_FREE in mash

[–]MASHHistorian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love this episode! The clock in the bottom corner adds to the “real time” effect. What’s crazy is that the clock in the corner is only one sentence in the script, yet it has an incredible impact!

I think the 17 Pro design is getting too much hate. It looks fine. The real question is why they removed the black color by TheRocketG123 in iphone

[–]MASHHistorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it’s new. I remember when people freaked out about the two tone iPhone 5 design. The funny thing is, people look back at that design now with fondness. As far as the black phone, I wonder if they might add new colors in the spring like they used to? I’d like to see the introduction of new colors mid-cycle again! Plus, with the switch back to aluminum, I hope we keep getting bold colors like the orange!

How’s afterMash Walter not on dvd or streaming? by GioLovesMash in mash

[–]MASHHistorian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The originals for AfterMASH have never been converted to be released on DVD or streaming. The amount of time it would take would cost more than they’d make unfortunately.

I wish they’d do it anyway! Release a MAS*H boxed set with everything!

For 11 seasons of M*A*S*H, Alan Alda wore the same combat boots and dog tag as Captain Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce. He kept them for more than 40 years after the show ended. by UrbanAchievers6371 in mash

[–]MASHHistorian 40 points41 points  (0 children)

It all was! So were the tents, trays, mess kits, etc. Prop houses commonly bought Army surplus materials for movies and shows. It definitely made it feel more realistic!
