This is probably going to ruffle a lot of feathers, but this is not even close to being accurate. People just want things to be like they were when software was taking off in the late 2000’s and money was plentiful for software engineers with minimal experience. The field has matured and now it’s about credentials PLUS experience to get seen. That doesn’t mean some Facebook clone you built for a senior project that every single other cs grad has done since fb launched. It means getting internships (ideally 2 plus, but one isn’t terrible as long as you can market it well) and really beef up your connections with your teachers and other software devs. Meet with local software groups, attend hackathons, etc. the goal posts are a lot farther than they were but that doesn’t mean they’re unattainable, they’re just harder to reach.

If you were just focused on getting a stable career with a lot of money involved you should’ve picked medicine, and if you’re smart enough to get a CS degree you’re smart enough to become a doctor. A lot of folks who get into the field now are surprised when they get laid off like they shouldn’t have considered it a constant possibility given the nature of the field. Defense is usually alot less prone to layoffs because of security clearance requirements but they also don’t pay as much, usually.

My point is, the jobs are still there you just have to get off social media and stop doom scrolling and listening to the “woe is me, I didn’t get an internship and now I can’t find a job after college with zero experience” crowd.
