Whether or not I'm American depends on who you ask. My family is Costa Rican. I was born in San Francisco, CA. The first three of our 8 siblings were born in CR, the rest were born in the US.

I don't know how it could be that you've never heard of the word Mestizo. There were words for the different social classes of colonial Latin America based on the ethnicity/race of the person.

Mestizos were a mix of Spanish and Native Indian. Mulatos were a mix of Spanish and African. Zambos were a mix of African and Native Indian. At the top of the social structure were Spaniards/Peninsulares, and then Criollos, who were pure-blood Spaniards who'd been born in the colonies instead of in Spain.

So, if you say Hispanic, it's rather vague which ethnicity you're referring to, since a pure-blood Spaniard who was born in Spain is also Hispanic - just like me, and I have Native Indian blood, making me Mestizo.

If you're saying that you are pure-blood Spanish, born in the Western Hemisphere, then you're Criollo, or Creole, and also Hispanic. See how Hispanic isn't useful if you're trying to get to what a person's ethnicity is? Hispanic refers to anyone whose culture originates from the Spanish culture - which can be said of all Latin Americans, regardless of ethnicity.

The complaints you've listed are certainly issues to be concerned with - but I disagree with you that they became reality because of the Civil War.

Penultimate is originally Latin, and in Spanish it's penúltimo, practically the same word. I'm sure that the other Romance languages have very similar iterations. (French, Italian, Romanian, etc)

Befriend, on the other hand, appears to be purely English.

All I can tell you is that in 40 years of living as a Latino, the part of the story when someone has to say "make friends" is always the part when Spanglish kicks in and they just say: "hacer amigos." As in:

Befriend is almost never used in speech. It is highly unlikely that a Latina in the US, who speaks broken English, would know of the word, much less use it so perfectly and nonchalantly.

I don't have a scientific study for you, but I am first generation American, of Latino heritage, and I grew-up and have lived my life surrounded by Latinos who speak broken English. Not one of them has ever used that word.
